So much of the nostalgia about the 60s is fantasy anyway. I only knew one person who could be classified as a hippie. It was an uncle, my grandfather didn't want his sons drafted for any reason so he sent one son to college. He promptly failed every class, disappeared for a few years and eventually needed to be rescued from some nutjob cult. He finally grew up, became an electrician and raised a family.
My other uncle went into the Michigan national guard. He went to school after he served his time and became a very successful businessman.
The rest of my aunts and uncles looked and behaved like hippies but didn't have any firm political beliefs. They just wanted to get high. These days they're mostly conservatives.
