Dr. Martin Luther King
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference waves to the crowd before his famous "I Have A Dream" speech on 8/28/1963.

REMEMBERING DR. KING: Many will have the day off today. For many it has become just another holiday to do nothing with but sleep in, maybe have friends over etc.

But I do want to pay honor to a man who truly embodied the belief of the greatest aspects of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence..."All men are created equal"... and all men are given "divine freedom" from the God who made them.

These two truths are fundamentally what sets America - in its greatness - apart from the rest of the nations on the planet. We see the value and dignity of every individual. We say that no one else has the right to deny that equality. We say that no one else has the right to deny others the freedom that God has given them.

The great threat posed to our nation today is in fact the premature end to these beliefs. Whether it is from within and the voices that wish to stifle all speech acknowleding that God who created us, or be it voices from outside that say we are infidels and should be dead - the great battle of our time still is centered around these two constructs.

If all men are created equal then every person has the right to live as full a life as they can make in their years on this earth. The taking of that life especially innocent life - while still in the womb - violates the most core doctrine of what America was built upon.

If those who despise our freedom wish to attack - to kill us - and by doing so causing us to live in fear, then they seek to end our God-given rights to freedom. Thusly America must always be by definition freedom's greatest champion.

The foresight of seeing an entire region of this planet where freedom was long lost, and saying that for our own protection we must allow these people to taste it for themselves - IS the long term foresight that will help keep us free.

In order to best pay homage to Dr. King - we need to understand WHAT he believed - and on that is no question...

1. The equality of man
2. The God-given right to freedom

And on these we not only agree - but miss his voice in the future of what America will become!

Unfortunately, many or even most of those who will expound on King's "I Have A Dream" speech today are the very ones who refuse to let that dream become reality. I think they're typically called "race baiters."

According to them, everything and everyone must be viewed in the context of race. Yet, today, they will talk about his "dream" as if it's theirs.

Having my own business, I've never had the day off. Most of America works on, except for government workers, schools, banks and the like. Ho hum, just another day.

Another January, another Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The observance has to a great extent deteriorated, as have many other holidays, into just a paid day off for people with government jobs and an opportunity for retailers to snatch whatever available credit remains on bankcards.

At the same time, there will be no shortage of worshipful speeches and articles about Dr. King, some of them bordering on idolatry. For the man has moved to the pantheon of secular saints.

Remembering the Real Martin Luther King, Jr.

Amazing.

They should have left political holidays at George Washington.
