NBC tsunami telethon [BARF ALERT]
NBC | January 15, 2005

Posted on 01/15/2005 5:21:21 PM PST by ejdrapes

Anyone see the beginning of the NBC tsunami telethon? They stared out with Madonna singing a trippy version of "Imagine". And I thought they wanted people to tune in and donate....that was a complete turn off to me. And no, I don't need Brad Pitt manning the phones to get me to donate either.

My God. Eric Clapton and Roger Waters performing "Wish you were here".

My illusions have been shattered once and for all.

I think it's cool...they're getting a lot of money, does it matter if you don't like the performers?

I'm a bit more compelled by the story Geraldo just had on about two families who lost loved ones in the mudslides in Cali.

This is just fixin' to come on (on the west coast). The reviews so far aren't kind, I see. (HA)

I loved Clooney's admonition, paraphrasing... 'You're either with us in this effort, or you're against it.' I have no doubt that he hated that line when G.W. Bush delivered it in early 2002....

In fairness..I think Paul McCartney gave $1m and, I believe Michael Schumacher gave $10m.

Can't fault that folks.

Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher donated $10 million to help the victims -- a close friend and his two sons, aged four and five, were killed in Thailand.

Now, that is well-placed, well-meaning charity!

That's good about Paul & Michael. Also Sandra Bullock gave $1m. But these clowns tonight are trolling "the little people" to give til it hurts. And then they're indignant if anyone asks about accountability.

NO, THANKS!

I will, however, watch and make fun.

Oh, and Sandra Bullock is another who donated €1m. She did the same after 9/11.

Understand one thing about most celebrity types, if they think a camera might be present ... they would show up for a letter opening.

My ONLY concern with the massive focus on the Asian Tsunami relief effort at the moment, is the other charities that will suffer.

I went carol singing this Christmas with the Light Opera Society I'm involved with. And we raised €16,300 (that's about €22,000).

People said to me afterwards, I suppose you'd have to donate that to the Tsunami victims now. But, I didn't agree - every year we've given half what we raised to local Meals on Wheels, and they rely on the money. And a couple of other groups like the local Down Syndrome Association and the Lifeboats asked us to consider them. So we decided to give a gesture to Asian Tsunami Relief (and vowed to do a cabaret or something later in the year for the cause, when our own show is out of the way)..and still honoured our commitments to the local charities we've always supported with our carol singing.

I absolutely agree with that. I'd go so far as to suggest, in fact, that sending donations later in the year will mean much more, anyway. After all the elites move on to other causes, there will still be orphaned children and homeless families in need in southeast Asia.

(I'm so over Maroon 5. Jamiroquai knockoffs to my ear.)

Norah Jones is ok.

What has Meg Ryan done to her FACE?

If all the actors/actresses gave as much...

Annette Bening just happily announced that the Sri Lankan "sewing factories" are getting back into production. Are those sweat shops or what?

This is the last gasp of Old Media. Why do I need a bunch of washed up musicians to tell me to donate. I donated three weeks ago.

YOU might not need any motivation, but some people might. I don't agree with celebrities' politics, however, in this situation, it is not about politics--it is about helping a devestated part of the world. How can people bring politics into this?
