The school claimed the necklace colors are gang related. It would be charitable to conclude that these school officials are simply nimrods. As is suggested, there's probably something conscious and incideous going on here.

The school's code of conduct states student's jewelry "will be safe, appropriate and not...interfere with the educational process." It also says "students will not wear any clothing deemed to be gang related." The code of conduct does not explicitly mention beads or beaded necklaces. But school officials say the beads have been affiliated with gangs in the past. So they're not allowed. "We want to make sure that our students have options to express themselves, but it has to be done in a way that's safe for everyone in the school building, said Shari Greenleaf, the attorney for the city school district

Geez!

But isn't America "gang-related?" I mean, isn't a country just a really big gang?

Sounds to me as if the issue is not the colors of the necklace, but the fact that it is made of beads, especially since she says the
school colors are red, white and blue. It also looks like she is allowed to wear a shirt with Old Glory on it.
Sorry, I have to agree with the school authorities on this one, however jerky they're being. Wearing a necklace has nothing do with getting an education.
...maybe red-white-and-blue pom-poms would be acceptable?...

Is this stuff that threatening?????????? No, not to anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together.
It's the entire collective mindset.
SOME student SOMEWHERE might have something gang-related,so anything with the closest association is instantly banned.
Heaven forbid they actually PUNISH someone for braking a rule, they just make more rules to *correct* the problem!

braking a rule By this I mean fighting, destruction of school property, etc.
Not wearing a particular color necklace made of beads.

" Sorry, I have to agree with the school authorities on this one, however jerky they're being."I disagree with your disagreement. This a blatant, hate America action by leftist twits who bully children.

My oldest daughter was sent home from school once for wearing an orange scarf her grandmother gave her. To her it was just an accessory. To the school authorities, it was a possible gang marker.
I made the decision that she would not wear the scarf to school -
not because I agreed with the school, but because if wearing orange marked her as a gang member
even though she wasn't, I didn't want her endangered.
I repeat, an accessory is not free speech, it's just a scarf (or necklace). And I don't think it's a "Hate America" move, considering that they apparently did not have a problem with the girl's shirt.
...now, if there was a cross hanging from her necklace...

Yeah those liberals are pretty tough, picking on little girls for wearing patriotic jewlry. They should go start a protest at Camp Lejune.

Glad to see someone's suing. There needs to be a new
Tinker case - one that will end for good this despicable practice whereby schools justify any kind of repression of the First Amendment on the ground that it "encourages gangs."

The administration's rationale for this decision:
School officials say the color red is often affiliated with one particular gang, and the color blue is often affiliated with another.
This doesn't make sense. By their logic, ALL items that have either red or blue on them must be banned. This includes blue jeans, for example.

As Raven's mom I would really like to update you: for one there was a snow day when she had the shirt one, flags are not allowed by student's. she has had 4 family members in Iraq, One has been at Walter Reed for 9 months, 22yr old trying to regain the use of his hands. So I wanted to update you on what is also considered gang related,
Colors, blue, red orange pink and black, white t-shirts, black and white, purple, yellow I can continue, however it seems lately almost all colors. Hats and baseball caps, Hair styles and color, professional sports team jackets (same color as gang, nickname, ect. In this case the Patriots, school name and same colors.) Baggy clothing combat-style clothing, fatigues (as worn in Iraq, US Army).
Sweatshirts layered in more than one(hope you don't live in New York, below zero today, but can't wear 2 sweatshirts.) Sweaters that are color of gangs, (I have a black one) T-shirts(white,pro-sports team ones) Gloves with the fingers cut out, belt buckles, worn on certain side of the pants but I have clue what side, so out it goes, Pant legs rolled up, or shirt cuffs, Don't put white hankerchief in that jean pocket, gang all the way, gym shoes(depending on name), school IDS depending on color, shoe or roller skate laces, hand signals(like the president daughter used during the Inaugeration)Business cards, in gang colors, Bandanas, Jewelry,(including but not limited to rings, pins, pendants, and earrings, excessive amount of gold, jelly bracelets, dressing in two or more colors, pagers and cell phones, possessing large amounts of money, Excessive swearing, rebellion, curfew violations but it also says:
A CURRENT DRESS TREND OR STYLE MAY BE ADOPTED BY GANGS, BUT YOUNG PEOPLE DRESSING LIKE THIS DOES NOT NECESSARILY INDICATEDE THAT THEY ARE GANG MEMBERS. With all of the above how CAN WE POSSIBLE KNOW WHAT TO PUT OUR CHILDREN IN.
