Love the Browning HP, wish I still had mine; I never had a problem with grip shape, but I know some people who thought it was too "square", but I guess I was used to it.
If your.40 shoots fine in the rest, but not when held, I only know of one solution; practice, practice and more practice....

Yep...you hit the nail on the head! Believe it or not though, I've created a bunch-o .45 ACP biggots. :-). My kids and wife have been shooting the ole Colt and think the HP is something less. I love it personally. But you are correct in saying that it would certainly help if I practiced MORE with it!
