*While reading reviews about the "Live Aid" DVD on Amazon, I read a comment from a teenager that wrote that it's an ideal gift for his/her parents. And knowing that Live Aid was from 1985.

*Because when I mentioned Hall & Oates to my cousin who is 20 he had NO clue as to who I was talking about. Becauase Bon Jovi, who just came out with "Runnaway" like YESTERDAY -- right? (not) is now over 20 yrs old and considered "Classic." Because "Do They Know it is Christmas" is now 20 yrs old..........................................

Hi everyone. I've been a lurker since the 2000 election and, given the terrible news coming out of India/Asia this week, thought that a light-hearted thread would be nice. I noticed that you guys like to delve into some cultural (pop or otherwise) discussions and thought this subject matter would be fun.

The excerpt is from a web site called 'InThe80s' which is an 80s nostalgia site. I thought some of the posts on this particular page were pretty amusing, and I know some of you FReepers would be willing to share similar stories and anecdotes. This 80s site doesn't get many posts, and I would prefer to discuss such things with fellow conservatives, as other 80s sites always end up trashing Ronald Reagan, which always ticks me off.

Given that the New Year is upon us, it is as good a time as any to discuss the passage of time and how one's youth just doesn't seem that long ago (or maybe it does!). This discussion is open to anyone, btw; not just us 80s people.

I know you guys frown on vanities; I just thought a diversion from the more serious and sad events of this past week might be welcome. I also hope I posted this correctly.

The one that got me was the second remark that mentions that awful song "Do They Know It's Christmas". That is exactly 20 years old this month. On the Cashbox top 100 chart for '84, it shows it debuted on 12/22/84. Yikes!!!!!

The "Oldies" station in my area started playing "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys (1988)and "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel (1983) about two years ago...no joke!

My wife and mother-in-law were on the Concorde with Phil Collins as he flew from London to New York so that he could play in both concerts. My wife thought it was cool, my mother-in-law thought it was all stupid.

But how long has it been since "Hands across America"? I cannot even remember what that was supposed to raise our consciousness about, it obviously didn't work.

I wasn't born in the 80's. I was in school in the 80's. And yes, I had more posters of Duran Duran on the wall...
