The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 8-2 Tuesday to approve a resolution urging Caltrans to rename the Bay Bridge the "Emperor Norton Bridge."
If you didn't already know...
Joshua Norton was a Gold Rush businessman who lost his fortune in 1859, and then declared himself "Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico."

I remember being ticked when they wanted to rename "The Stick" - 3Com Park. The anger subsided in time for them to name the new Giants home, "Pac Bell Park". But this is ridiculous!
The SF Board of Supervisors want to rename the Bay Bridge after a demented nut job.
What a great idea!?

The "Gavin Newsom Bridge" would make the exact same statement. ;)

I like it. Emperor Norton was a classic eccentric Gold Rush figure. Maybe naming the bridge for him will inspire some kid to study California history.

Whatever. At least they could have sold the naming rights for a few million so they could build some homeless shelters, needle giveaway storefronts, and AIDS centers.
