START OF THE MONDAY QUARTERBACKING DECISION:
4:00 p.m. PT
In an apparent move to avoid the crowd of reporters and citizens outside the courthouse, the jurors are taken out of court through an underground parking garage instead of their usual exit on the sidewalk. Beth Karas and I are standing outside the garage when the two sheriff's vans pull out. I can see the Teamster seated in the front passenger seat of the first van. A photographer from the Modesto Bee is standing with us and he begins taking photos. The court officer driving the first van slams on the brakes and leaps out of the vehicle. He stomps over to the photographer, Al Golub, while shouting, "Did you take a picture?" He stammers, "I did." The officer orders him to hand over the disc from his camera. He offers to delete the image, but the officer snaps, "I don't have time, buddy." He grabs the disc and gets back in the van. The van pulls away, brakes sqealing. The second van follows. In the front seat, Strawberry Shortcake is roaring with laughter. Harriet Ryan
3:35 p.m. PT: Deliberations end for the day.
False alarm. Delucchi announces that "the jury has been asked to be excused for the night. They'll be back Monday morning 8 o'clock." No verdict this week. Harriet Ryan
3:33 p.m.
Minutes after defense lawyers came to the courtroom, prosecutors arrive at court. The judge is here in his robe. Looks like something is going down. Harriet Ryan
3:05 p.m.
Just minutes ago, the courtroom was atwitter because Stanislaus County District Attorney James Brazelton took a seat in the courtroom. Does it mean something? Is a verdict near? Those questions quickly fade as Brazelton walks out of the courtroom. The bailiff, who has been walking in and out of the judge's chambers, tries to reassure nosy reporters that he's just "doing some housekeeping." "Because I'm running around doesn't mean anything happens," the bailiff says. "It doesn't mean nothing's happening," someone shouts back. Harriet Ryan....
Scott has a Hobson's Choice........life w/P and in the general prison population (subject to other prisoners' actions) OR death sentence and housed in lonely isolation on death row.
You should have heard the men complain during golf. For 6 weeks some of them weren't getting fed and had to order takeout!
I much prefer the verdict when NG is hosting...
that's Noon my time.
I am NOT fond of Kimberly.
QUESTION: who exactly are all these rude people who propose to judge who has a "life" or even what one is?? I don't let my kids even say "get a life." It's as good manners as saying "shut up" or even f-u in my book.
Oh-oh, chair in chamber?
Might be trouble in jury...
Not sure yet. It's just after 10 here.
May have spaghetti and meatballs.
Been a while since I had that.
Gosh I hope not. Mr. Peach wants me to go Christmas shopping for our granddaughter and I'm resisting :-)
I like NG the best too.
Latest update:
A CHAIR was brought in to the Judge's chambers.
TH's speculating that 'could' mean the jurors are being individually polled.
Could it mean they are hung?
I see I should have pinged you to a post of mine a few up on this page. FYI on how you come across. Who raised you?
I am in your same time zone at present,
but I am HUNGRY now! It's lunchtime
in Mississippi.
RBA is a nice guy.
He's just having some fun here.
Oh God, I don't know.
Maybe, but I doubt it.
I just hope it's not something that would render a mistrial.
Ha,ha, ha, I got my kitchen tv during Impeachment.
Our husbands know what that crucial kitchen appliance is when news is a-poppin'! :-)
I need to make a cheesecake and vegies with dip for a Christmas party tonight. Now, do I get them finished before we know the verdict, or knit frantically and cook afterwards. Decisions, decisions.
Geragos on deck.
Pinz
Haven't heard a report of family showing up yet.
It's a dessert cake, with strawberries, and usually whipped cream.
(Realize I got here a bit late today; hope no one already said that.)
:-)
I would not be surprised. Mark Geragos, with phone attached to ear, has arrived, Jim Brazelton there.
*runs in panting*.... any word?
Something's up. But nobody is sure just what. Maybe verdict, maybe not.
Nope.
I might be wrong but I thought I heard, after the verdict, that Geragos was off the case and would not be running the defense during the sentencing phase. Hmmmmm......
