Protesters descended on the San Francisco International Auto Show at the Moscone Center on Sunday to demand better fuel efficiency from Detroit.
"We're five percent of the world's population. We consume 25 percent of the world's oil," Jason Mark of Global Exchange told KCBS reporter Doug Sovern. "We just can't keep living that way. The costs are very real and they're immediate."
Mark said that besides costs to the economy and the environment, expenditures by U.S. military and the deaths of Iraqi civilians caught in the war could be connected to Americans' driving habits. He characterized the war in Iraq as an oil war.
Neither the automakers on hand nor the auto-show organizers would comment on the protest.
Most of those in attendance were more interested in snapping photos of concept cars such as a $200,000 sports car that gets only a few miles to the gallon on display in the exotic vehicles showcase.
The sound of camera cell phones snapping pictures inside contrasted sharply with the singing protesters outside.
This should elicit a pretty good Savage rant tomorrow then.
I have always been impressed by a good Hummer!!
