I thought it was interesting to do a little statistical analysis of FreeRepublic.com stats vs. that "other" site.
These first statistics from Alexa.com (tracking service owned by Amazon) show daily ranking over the period of one year. Yahoo is ranked #1. Increase in ranking is an exponential increase. In other words, site #10,000 gets more than double the traffic of site #20,000. In this case, the lower the ranking number, the better.
Here is the actual reach of the site, showing how many people per million population on the web visit the site each day.
Here you can see the exponential difference in the sites. FR is averaging approximately 600 visits per million web users/day. DU is averaging approximately 125 visits per million users/day. Free Republic has FIVE TIMES as much traffic as DU.
FYI
I think you're right. Maybe someone could organize a boycott! :)
"I wonder how many hits on DU come from FREEPERS?
I visit about once a week..."
I look a couple of time, per week. Know your enemy.
I visit a local forum that apparently crashes on a regular basis. After one of these crashes I suggested that I would be willing to pay a few bucks per year to access a forum that actually works.
You should have heard the screams that brought from the liberal users. How dare I suggest a "class based" forum for "wealthy" users only.
And I wonder how many FR visits are from DUmmies?
A lot of DU's visit here. Everytime I go there snooping, they are quoting us or sniping at one of our posts.
> Jim R on the other hand has NO advertising on the site.
Not so. I see a book ad in the right hand frame of
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/browse
although I think there's a way to turn that off.
FR may have a weak search engine, but DU charges
money for theirs. Funny thing is that google/yahoo
work on both sites as long as what you seek is at
least a day old.
FR probably has vastly more return visits, due to
being a much more civil place. If DU is what being
"progressive" means, how many people really want
to wear that label?
I agree that the advertisers on DU are wasting their money on us, as long as we NEVER click on an ad on their site.
LOL.. they will be wringing their hands over the facts in this post.
Very interesting!
I'd never heard of that site.
Another free ranking place is http://www.ranking.com.
They too have us at over ten times as popular.
What would be really funny is is all the FReepers who peer in over there stopped for say a month and then we went back and looked at their numbers to see how much they've dropped.
Talk about a psychological blow to the collective DU ego.
Is that little dip there on FR when the site went down for repairs?
Aside from the obvious view points, DU is hardly user friendly when it comes to basic research. They have absolutely no search tool WHATSOEVER for articles posted ages ago(so they come here to do that) I tend to wonder if this b/c they don't have the know how to create such a search tool, or do not want their own commentary to bite them in the ass the way it usually does.
Wow. I never thought of that. I've only been over there twice. I won't go again.
Nah, we can throw them a bone every now and then. It's compassionate conservatism. ;-)
I don't understand why so many here are concerned at all with DU.
Democratic Underground is barely a pimple on FR a$$.
Negative, It is at a high school where the NEA (National Extortion Association) rules. It is just an off-the-shelf firewall.
I think it's like adults laughing at the word 'poop'. It's silly and releases tension. Ya know, poop/DU, same thing.
I have a hunch that the links to Drudge, CNS, et al, are there for our convenience. The links go directly to the sites without any kind of tracking in the url. From what I can tell, Jim has cross-linked with other sites to support each other. It's the Internet at its organic best.
