If people start to feel that Kerry cannot win, they will defect this time to "send a message" -- particularly if they held their nose and voted for Gore in 2000.

If they think it's close and think Kerry has a shot at it, then, no, Kerry won't be much of a factor. However, he will score a couple of percentage points with people that will not vote for the other guys at all; i.e., those that would've stayed home if he weren't there. (Anti-war single-issue nuts, etc.)
