He really, really wanted Gore to win in 2000, and his contract with CBS runs out in 2006. What's he got to lose? He thought he could pull it off.

does Bill O'Reilly know what Dan Rather was thinking when he put forged documents on the air?

Why care what he thinks? The man is a centrist on everything. He has no core ideals.

What are the odds that Dan Rather would have accepted such patently phony documents from, say, the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth?
