Tom Coburn may be indispensable to the Republicans' effort to hold on to their majority in the U.S. Senate in November. "He is their best hope for keeping an Oklahoma seat Republican in the closely divided Senate," wrote conservative pundit Robert Novak.
Coburn was swept into Congress as a member of the Republican class of 1994 that gained control of the House for the first time in 40 years and installed Newt Gingrich as speaker. "He really drank the Kool-Aid with the class of '94; he was one of the real far-right guys," says Kenneth Hicks, a political science professor at Rogers State University in Claremore, Okla.
As far right as Coburn is on fiscal issues, he is even farther right on social issues. "I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other people who take life," he told the Associated Press in July.
"He's a principled, pompous member," said a senior Republican staffer turned lobbyist. "He's one of those '94 guys, and there were a certain percentage of them who were so anti-system that they don't want to play the game. And from a leadership perspective and a lobbyist perspective, we don't like those kind of people ... He's going to be a frickin' nightmare in the Senate [if he wins]."
Last week, he declared Oklahoma lagging in economic development because "you have a bunch of crapheads in Oklahoma City that have killed the vision of anybody wanting to invest in Oklahoma." His spokesperson could not explain who or what Coburn was talking about. What's more, Coburn proclaimed the Senate race a "battle of good vs. evil."

Ping!!
Coburn would win right now, easily. If Carson keeps up the attack ads he will win even bigger.
ping!!!
Checking it out now!
I think we've got the Liberal bastards in a corner!
I'm feeling better about our position than I have in awhile. I think most of America is sick of them. I'm convinced that a lot of democrat voters haven't got a clue what it is they're voting for. It's our job to inform them whenever an opportunity presents itself.
Coburn is a kick-ass candidate. Carson has to make himself look like a conservative candidate because Bush is going to win your state by 25% give or take a few, so there aren't exactly Kerry coattails to ride. Besides, if Bush does get up around 60% on election night, it would take just a helluva lot of ticket splitting for Carson just to get close.
I'm usually wrong on predictions--it's why I don't make them often--but I believe that Coburn will win and a few eyebrows will rise around here as to how big his margin is. IOW, on election night, we MIGHT be expecting a close race by then, but when the numbers come in, I think we'll be pleasantly surprised.
Well .. remember something important. Whether Coburn likes it or not, Bill Frist will be giving him direction. But .. both of them being doctors, they may have a special rapore. That said .. I could see Frist taking advantage of Coburn's .. shall we say .. openness to speak his mind.
This would be an excellent working arrangement. Frist remains above the fray and Coburn gets to vent!! LOL!
I live in Oklahoma, and I've joined the Coburn campaign to knock on doors. Carson MUST BE DEFEATED.
Thanks for the ping to this--great pictures! I came home Saturday night after the OU game to find that my Coburn yard sign had been deliberately ripped on both sides, so that it flapped in the wind. I had to take it down, and need to get another one.
I don't know if it was just kids around the neighborhood, or someone with ideological motivations. The former I can understand, if not excuse. But I have this nagging feeling that it might have been the latter--really infuriating.
I love it when lobbyists say things like that!
GO TOM GO!!!
"The article is an attempt at a hit piece."
Funny, it made me like him a lot. ;)
Tom Coburn is great. I have his bumper sticker on our cars. But you gotta admit he has foot-in-mouth disease. If he wins, it is either:
-a miracle
-proof that Oklahoma is THE most conservative state in the Union.
I don't care to much about Coburn, I just want to know who's the babe at the far left of the pic! ; )
Translation: We can't bribe them with government largesse or campaign contributions.
Now, there is such a thing as being a team player and working with others. But there's also a point where you have to be your own man.
Sounds like a great song!
Excellent!
One of the many things I admire about Dr. Coburn is that he is absolutely fearless. He has had to fight off cancer. He is a Cincinnatus, willing to serve for a time in the Senate but intent on returning to his job of delivering babies. People in OK have done themselves proud just by nominating this fine candidate. Contrast the Okies with those awful Floridians who just reelected the euthanasia advocate "Judge" George W. Greer. There could be no greater contrast between two "Republicans" than Coburn and Greer. Still, I would not take his election for granted, for the forces of OK "darkness" will prevail against him in a mighty way come Nov. 2.
bttt!!!!
BTTT in support of Coburn.
