And now, believe it or not, Susan Estrich says it’s time to get dirty because we’ve been too restrained up to now. She doesn’t want Kerry to make the “Dukakis mistake” of being too nice.

I heard Susan Estrich screaming her head off as well. She said they were being nice? A year of "Bush is Hitler", "Bush knew", and "Hate Bush" was somehow restrained? Furthermore, I was not old enough to vote in 88' and quite frankly did not pay attention, but Susan said that Dukakis ran a clean, nice, campaign. History tells me that is not the case? What do you guys remember?

As I recall, the Duke was so constantly on the defensive he didn't mount much of campaign. The W. Horton material, originally introduced during the primaries by Algore, the Duke's photo op in a tank, and his reply to a debate question about the death penalty for someone attacking his wife hurt him significantly. His VP candidate, Lloyd Bentsen, got off the line to Dan Quayle that he was no John Kennedy, but that may have been the team's highlight of the campaign.

As I recall.
