Would camera flash account for those shadows?
Nope, back then you would have used a silly camera flash cube probably to take pics in the dark - but you wouldn't have bothered to waste a flash in the bright sunlight.
I have color-corrected some photos of a friend who served in Vietnam. His pictures from over there were badly faded by now and required quite a bit of photoshop work to bring back true color and contrast.
