Friends and readers,
As I mentioned in my most recent column, I am coming under fire for the campaign ads I created using the 9-11 footage. I don't really care what people say about me, but Sen. Fern Shubert's campaign is being unfairly maligned. The ads are entirely truthful, and the video was used because the 9-11 Families For A Secure America endorse her because she is the only candidate in NC working to prevent such attacks from happening again. The ad can be viewed at www.forfern.com. You will also find a longer radio ad and a great deal of documentation supporting the messages.
I am asking a special favor of you:
Please review the ads, my 3 columns ("NC Welcomes Terrorists", "NC Press Enables Terrorism" and "Ads That Show 9-11 Attacks Are Necessary"), Sen. Shubert's rebuttal press release below and today's piece in the "Charlotte Observer" (also below). If you agree with me that this is a serious issue, that North Carolinians need to know about, please help me counter the Democrat attack machine.
On Wed. night's "Hannity and Colmes" Mr. Colmes interviewed a reporter from the Charlotte Observer on the subject of Sen. Shubert's ads. This was a politically motivated hit piece in which several lies were told and facts distorted. Colmes and the reporter claimed that none of the 9-11 hijackers had NC driver's licenses - in truth, 2 not only had NC licenses, but learned to fly in NC. They called the use of the 9-11 footage a crass and scurrilous attack, capitalizing on a tragedy - they failed to mention that the ads were paid for in large part by people who lost family members in the 9-11 attacks. They claimed that Easley had made it tougher to get an NC driver's license following 9-11 - that is a blatant lie; it is easier now than ever! All one has to do to get an NC driver's license is to sign an affidavit and pay$2.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The same lies are being run in newspapers across NC, and are being repeated on talk radio.
The favor I ask of you is to help me help Sen. Shubert in protecting our national security. Please call Fox News at: 1-888-369-4762 Please leave a voice mail on both the corrections line and the story idea line. If you choose the corrections option, and press 0 while the voice mail message is playing, you can get to the main switch board. If you are persistent, you can get through to the producer of "Hannity and Colmes". Please inform them of their errors and demand they do a follow up piece in which either Sen. Fern Shubert, Peter Gadiel (of the 9-11 Families For A Secure America), or myself are interviewed. Please email Sean Hannity (Hannity@foxnews.com ), Alan Colmes (Colmes@foxnews.com ) and Col. North (Warstories@foxnews.com) - Col. North guest hosted that night. Please inform them of their errors, and similarly request a follow up piece. Please also call into the Sean Hannity Show today (North is Guest hosting) at 1-800-941- SEAN, and speak to Col. North on this issue. If possible, please write letters to the editors of NC newspapers, correcting the lies of our opponents, and please call into any talk show you hear discussing this matter.
Thank you, and I am eternally in your debt,
Judson
In First Fight of Election Season, Easley Hides Behind Aide to Attack Shuberts Ads But He Picked the Wrong Aide

(Raleigh) Fearful of the truth coming out before the election, Mike Easley has dispatched his campaign manager Jay Reiff to attack Fern Shuberts ads. The ads point out Easleys willingness to help terrorists and other law-breakers. According to the Raleigh News and Observer, Reiff called the ads shameful and said they were false and manipulative.
Shameful? How about Truthful Shubert responded. Whats shameful is the way the leaders of the Democrat party have deceived the public, including many loyal Democrats, about what theyre doing to help people who are breaking the law and endangering our citizens. There is no doubt Easley is helping illegal aliens and the terrorists who hide among them.
I challenge the Governor to point out anything in the ads that is untrue, Shubert continued. Most of the text actually came from the letter the 9-11 Families for a Secure America sent endorsing my campaign. The only voice, other than mine giving the required campaign disclosure, is that of Peter Gadiel, whose son Jamie was killed by terrorists. Peter feels so strongly that Easley needs to be stopped from helping terrorists that he contributed personal funds to help pay to air the ads.
Shubert also pointed out the irony of the fact that the Governor, who is notorious for failing to show up at events, once again failed to show up and sent someone else to attack her. Unfortunately, he chose someone notorious for mudslinging who actually sent out an attack email in South Carolina showing a picture of an Afghan money trader with an armload of cash and the comment Mark Sanford caught taking bundles of cash from the Taliban.
It is interesting to note that Jay Reiff was the campaign manager for incumbent South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges. His inappropriate attacks on Sanford helped Sanford defeat Hodges. Im delighted that Reiff is helping Governor Easley. I hope his mudslinging produces the same effect in North Carolina that it did in South Carolina, Shubert observed.
The ads speak for themselves. Anyone who wants to see them, the history of this issue, or the endorsement letter from the 9-11 families, can go to www.ForFern.com . North Carolinas law was changed in September 2001 in a way that aids terrorists and other law-breakers.
According to Wayne Hurder, Director of the DMV License Division, The fact that a person is in the United States without the permission of the Department of Homeland Security is irrelevant as far as North Carolina DMV is concerned, as per NCGS 20-7 and NCGS 4.01. Is Reiff going to call Hurders statement false? If not, Easley needs to explain his support for helping illegal aliens and the terrorists who hide among them.

Reality Check
National cable talk shows were buzzing this week about Republican gubernatorial candidate Fern Shubert's new television ad. It argues Democratic Gov. Mike Easley is making it easier for Sept. 11-type terrorists to infiltrate the country. Is her charge true?
THE AD
Announcer: "9-11 Families for a Secure America urge you to vote for Fern Shubert on July 20. Within days after 9-11, Mike Easley signed a law that made it easier for terrorists, illegal aliens, drunk drivers and everyone except law-abiding citizens to get driver's licenses. Fern Shubert is the only person running for governor who has been fighting Mike Easley's policy of giving licenses to illegal aliens and the terrorists who hide among them."
Shubert: "I'm Fern Shubert, candidate for governor, and my campaign, People Who Want Better Government, sponsored this ad."
THE PICTURES
The 30-second ad pans over grainy images of planes crashing into the World Trade Center towers. The announcer is a man whose son died when the buildings collapsed.
THE SKINNY
Some of Shubert's claims are open to interpretation. The state did loosen some rules for getting driver's licenses in late 2001.
For instance, officials stopped requiring Social Security numbers for licenses and instead mandated either a federal tax ID number, which is easier to obtain, or a Social Security number. Shubert says this makes it easier for illegal immigrants and outlaws to get driver's licenses, although the state was already known as a haven for easily getting licenses before the change.
At the same time in 2001, the state added hurdles, such as requiring drivers to either provide paperwork verifying their residency or swear they're an N.C. resident in an affidavit. In late 2003, as Shubert and other Republicans pressured Easley, the state announced it was cutting the kinds of documents that could be used to prove N.C. residency. Shubert argues some driver's license offices don't have the equipment to prove whether the documents are valid.
All the Republican gubernatorial candidates agree Shubert led the party on the issue, but she hasn't been alone. Fellow candidate and former Republican Sen. Patrick Ballantine co-sponsored her effort last year to reduce the kinds of documents that could be used to get a driver's license.

The candidate needs a new hairstyle very badly.
I sent an email to Colmes asking him if Michael Moore-on can make millions of dollars exploiting 9-11, why can't a political candidate legitmately use those images in a campaign, and let the voters decide? Of course, I never got an answer from "The Skull."
You must be doing something right - nobody ever complains about INeffective campaign ads!
Can you provide documentation proving this? This is the first I've heard this and it interests me greatly. I'm happy to help out as long as I can back these allegations up with fact.
MKM
Sure, there was truth to the ad, but it was not a politically smart thing to do - unless you were trying te get attention under the theory that no publicity is bad publicity. For a candidate that is largely ignored by Republicans in North Carolina, you succeeded in getting her mentioned nationally. Good work.
But I'm voting for Ballantine.
It was a poor choice for a campaign.
If the only purpose was to get Fern's name out there you won but it's all downhill from here. I'm no stranger to NC politics and the only time dims care about the truth is if they can gain from it, which is never. Fern's in for hell from now til the primary. NC dims will have a field day making up stories and the drones at the N&O and the Charlotte Observer will carve it in stone.
Stick to the budget, the tobacco settlement and job loss. The license matter is over and has been for several months.
Even more reason for me to not take you seriously, sorry. I feel I made a legitimate request.
MKM
If the "negative stereotype" is that conservative Republicans are willing to address the tough issues that RINOs run from, then so be it. None of this would even be necessary if the NC press would do its job. "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." I, for one, will not sit idly by while another 9-11 is planned - not if I see a way to help prevent it. You support timid, meek liberals if you wish. If you've ever read my columns, you know that's not my style. That's all the time I'll waste on this debate - let this answer be for all the timid.
The ad did not address ANY CURRENT issue and only made Fern and conservatives look bad.
And don't EVER ACCUSE ME OF SUPPORTING LIBERALS EVER AGAIN!
I have to agree with the conclusions that this is a Fern Shubert publicity stunt. This has Bill Gheen's fingerprints all over it. The fact is she will probably finish fifth in the primary and I am not sure Easley can be beaten this time, but I he can this is not the way to do it.
The dirver's license issue was not fixed, I repeat was not fixed. You can still get a license just by signing an affidavit and (maybe) showing an ITIN. Now, if you are illegal, would breaking one more law by signing a false affidavit really keep you from getting a liscense! GEESH, some people are gulliable!!!!!!
Regardless, Thanks for all y'all's support - WE DID IT!!!!!! Peter Gadiel will be on the Hannity show with Ollie North either today or tomorrow! Keep up the pressure on Fox and the newspapers! I'm off again - the phone is ringing off the hook, and emails are flooding in by the hundreds every hour! If I fail to answer any questions, I apologize. Go to www.forfern.com for rescources that will anawer all of your questions. Also, feel free to call into her office. The number can be found on the site.
