I can vouch for the validity of Harbison's First personally. I once read a Master's thesis - well, the abstract and introduction, actually, since I couldn't stomach the whole thing - in "Women's Studies" that was centered about an elaborate statistical analysis of the prevalence of misogynistic imagery in the music videos shown on MTV. And which thereby purported to show the rampant, thrusting phallocentrism inherent within our testosterone-dominated society. Or something.
