The south you're talking about is a half generation away from its democrat roots.

...yet it voted unanimously for Bush in the 2000 election and a majority against Clinton in both 96 and 92. The same thing cannot be said for yankeeland, which hasn't even gone marginally republican since the 80's.

Georgia just elected its first Republican governor since RECONSTRUCTION for chrissakes.

And you know why? Cause the state is swinging to the GOP as conservative dems increasingly realize that their party has abandoned them. In that particular case a key issue that brought them over was none other than the confederate flag.

In the Senate, Democrat Mary Landrieu just got re-elected in Louisiana, despite the RNC's best efforts.

The RNC efforts in Louisiana for that race were a disorganized mess. Trust me - I saw them first hand. Nevertheless, if you take out the solidly democrat blacks in New Orleans, a majority of the state's voters supported Terrell. So essentially LA is in the same situation as any swing state or city with a large ghetto. Everyone else votes a majority for the Republican but then the blacks, who vote about 95% Dem, skew it all the other way.

Meanwhile New Hampshire, Missouri, and Minnesota all retained or added Republican members.

Good for them!

The solid loyal base of the Republican party is that which can trace its roots back to the partys founding, not the johnny come lately white southerners, with their inbred hatred for the Union.

Campaign on that at your own peril, mac. Just remember one thing about politics as they stand today in America. So if you want to piss off southern conservatives, be my guest. Just don't expect to win a national election anytime soon.

Its the paleocon/paleolibertarian/buchananite/rockwellian/anarchist movement thats aligns itself with the socialist anti-american left in this country, and its self loathing, antediluvial creeps like you who endlessly attack important historical Republican figures and events, in some vain inbred attempt to 'revise' history.

You may say what you desire but just remember one thing. Within this last week alone you have made half a dozen lengthy posts defending Bill Clinton against impeachment, not to mention your additional apologia for Jim McPherson's marxist and democrat connections. The facts speak for themselves, mac, and that puts you aligning with the radical left.

I posted a Happy 150th Birthday ! Card for the Republican party last week

Wasn't that the thread that mistook the 149th aniversary?

Check this out. Wlat's leftism has been rubbing off on his head cheerleader.

"The perjury count against Clinton was for lying about adultery in a deposition during a civil lawsuit that stemmed from an incident that occurred before he was elected President. This misconduct did not flow from his holding the office of President of the United States, in fact one could argue that the civil suit for sexual harassment was brought against him  only because  he was POTUS." - mac_truck, 7/14/03

"It should become quite clear to someone who is even mildly objective, that were some serious constitutional questions about whether Clinton's crimes should be considered 'high' or 'petit'. I would further argue that recent events involving the plaintiff in that case make the 'petitness' of the misconduct even more apparent." - mac_truck, 7/14/03

"You seem to have difficulty distinguishing the difference between a legitimate political organization like WSWS [World Socialist Web Site], which you disagree with, and other quasi-terrorist or out-right terrorist groups." - mac_truck, 7/9/03 referring to a communist political party that that advocates the Lenin-style revolutionary overthrow of the western world

[mac_truck] The solid loyal base of the Republican party is that which can trace its roots back to the partys founding, not the johnny come lately white southerners, with their inbred hatred for the Union.

[You, replying] Campaign on that at your own peril, mac. Just remember one thing about politics as they stand today in America. So if you want to piss off southern conservatives, be my guest. Just don't expect to win a national election anytime soon.

Actually, mac seems to have forgotten that the original GOP constituency of businessmen and propertied types (the old Whig/Federalist constituency) together with Midwestern freesoil farmers split at the end of the century under McKinley and "Dollar" Mark Hanna......the Main Streeters and farmers became the Bull Moosers, and the moneyed crowd, who'd been the Mugwumps when they put down Chester Arthur for killing off the spoils system, became the Machine that renominated Taft and repudiated Roosevelt.

Two generations later, the economic royalists stuffed Ike down the GOP's throat in their usual unflappable manner, to the dismay of Main Street Republicans who wanted Bob Taft -- and later, it was the same thing all over again with Rockefeller and Scranton on one side, and Goldwater championing Main Street on the other.

And remember -- Goldwater was Republican conservativism before the Southern whites left the Democratic Party. So mac_truck errs when he ascribes Klannish antecedents to social-conservative and libertarian-conservative Main Street Republicans who oppose corporate welfarism as much as Hillary's Clintonista personalismo.

The Southern Democrats joined the GOP because they realized that the national Democratic Party had made overt ethnic hostility to Southern whites, American men, and Western civilization a xylophonic touchstone of their political identity.

So yes, they were Johnny-come-lately; but the rapprochement between Southern whites and Main Street Republicans in other parts of the country rested on their common resistance to sovietism, brain-trust socialism, anti-Americanism, and Leftist identity politics, all of which last were tactical postures taken to only one end: splitting up American society and inducing civil tumult.
