Professor Dumped Over Evolution Beliefs
http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/3/112003a.asp ^ | March 11, 2003 | Jim Brown and Ed Vitagliano

A university professor said she was asked to resign for introducing elite students to flaws in Darwinian thought, and she now says academic freedom at her school is just a charade.

During a recent honors forum at Mississippi University for Women (MUW), Dr. Nancy Bryson gave a presentation titled "Critical Thinking on Evolution" -- which covered alternate views to evolution such as intelligent design. Bryson said that following the presentation, a senior professor of biology told her she was unqualified and not a professional biologist, and said her presentation was "religion masquerading as science."

The next day, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Vagn Hansen asked Bryson to resign from her position as head of the school's Division of Science and Mathematics.

"The academy is all about free thought and academic freedom. He hadn't even heard my talk," Bryson told American Family Radio News. "[W]ithout knowing anything about my talk, he makes that decision. I think it's just really an outrage."

Bryson believes she was punished for challenging evolutionary thought and said she hopes her dismissal will smooth the way for more campus debate on the theory of evolution. University counsel Perry Sansing said MUW will not comment on why Bryson was asked to resign because it is a personnel matter.

"The best reaction," Bryson says, "and the most encouraging reaction I have received has been from the students." She added that the students who have heard the talk, "They have been so enthusiastically supportive of me."

Bryson has contacted the American Family Association Center for Law and Policy and is considering taking legal action against the school.

Here I grabbed the pieces from the chicken and the human protein in order to compare the same range as the pig. I think that this is not the correct way to analyze the data but as you can see the chicken still wins by 181 to 178.

OK, I've figured out the problem. You're comparing apples and oranges. Humans have two rps4 proteins; one Y linked, one X-linked. The pig only has one, as has the chicken. The human X linked is the protein that's homologous to the pig and chicken genes. (Which makes sense; girls have ribosomes as well; I wonder is the y-linked gene ever expressed?)

Sequence 1 gi 4432942 ribosomal protein S4 [Sus scrofa] Length 194 (1 .. 194)

Sequence 2 gi 1350997 40S ribosomal protein S4, X isoform (Single copy abundant mRNA protein) (SCR10). Length 263 (1 .. 263)

In yet another respect, humans really are identical to pigs.

In contrast, humans/pigs have 4 mismatches with the same chicken sequence.

Remember I also stated this ---

I also ran the X-linked ribosomal protein. In that analysis the chicken is closer to human than the primates. Go figure.

194 of 194 amino acids are identical on the aligned human/pig sequences. 190 of 194 are identical on the aligned human/chicken sequences. I'm failing to understand how a sequence with four differences is closer than an identical sequence.

How can you say this? I love pigs. I love their ribs, slowly barbecued. I love their loins, roasted. I love their hocks, simmered in a nice spicy Creole sauce.

Oh look, it's dinner time.

No, the proteins were on the Y that were farther than the chicken. It was not evident on the match as they were not identified as such on the comparison lines. The opposum both X and Y are farther away than the chicken and they have less identities than the chicken.

<< Why would someone be offerring them as transitions to birds? Just because they have wings? >>

Why would someone offer the commie Chinese creature as a transition? Just because it has feathers? (That's *assuming* it's real, which has been a bad assumption to have about the Chinese fossils in the past).

<< the platypus would be classified as a mammal based on its skeletal features. >>

Feathered dinos would be classified as lizards based on skeletal features. If platypus isn't transitional, then the commie Chinese creature shouldn't be claimed as such.

<< The platypus "bill" is totally mammalian in structure. >>

How come it's the only mammal with a bill? Do other mammals lack teats and lay eggs? How many other furry mammals have venemous spikes?

<< If those feathered dinosaur species were actually feathered mammals, they wouldn't be classified as transitional between dinos and birds because the rest of the skeletons wouldn't support such a hypothesis. >>

Hey - that's what I've been saying. Glad you agree.

<< The confusion over which pigeonhole in which to place Archaeopteryx shows that your analogies are totally false. >>

Pigeonhole - that's an appropriate word to use for a bird (provided archy isn't another fraud).
