That is to say, why is it illegal? Because society mandates it be illegal.

Because society mandates it be illegal. How is that? All the history of cannabis classification and legislation I have looked up only refer to a couple of special interests that were involved in the initial legislation. There seems to have been no "society" input.

Mandate? Hardly! Take a closer look at the percentage of the population that uses herb. Or, just take a look at the legalization effort in Nevada, 60/40 defeat is hardly a mandate.
"Bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression."--Thomas Jefferson
"Single acts of tyranny may be ascribed to the accidental opinion of the day; but a series of oppressions, begun at a distinguished period, and pursued unalterably through every change of ministers (adminstrators) too plainly proves a deliberate, systematic plan of reducing us to slavery." --Thomas Jefferson

"Society" mandated Klinton serve the country as president for two terms. "Society" mandates the Assault Weapons Ban as well. Do you support it?
