EVOLUTION WATCH Refuting Darwinism, point by point Author's new book presents case against theory in just 83 pages

Posted: January 11, 2003 1:00 a.m. Eastern

Editor's note: In 1999, author James Perloff wrote the popular "Tornado in a Junkyard," which summarizes much of the evidence against evolution and is considered one of the most understandable (while still scientifically accurate) books on the subject. Recently, WND talked with Perloff about his new book, "The Case Against Darwin."

© 2003 WorldNetDaily.com

QUESTION: Your new book is just 83 pages – and the type is large. What gives?

ANSWER: This past March I got a call from Ohio. There has been a battle there to allow critical examination of evolutionary theory in public schools, and a gentleman wanted 40 copies of Tornado to give to state legislators and school board members. I was delighted to send him the books, but I also knew that a state legislator isn't likely to pick up anything that's 321 pages long.

Q: And not just state legislators.

A: Right. We live in an age when parents often don't have time to read anything long, and their kids, who are usually more into video, may not have the inclination.

Q: So what's the focus of this book?

A: I've divided it into three chapters. The first is called "Is Darwin's Theory Relevant to Our Lives?" In other words, is the subject of this book worth my time or not? A lot of people think this is simply a science issue. And to some of them, science is booooring. But actually, it's the teaching of Darwin's theory as a "fact" that starts many young people doubting the existence of God. Once we stop believing in God, we discard his moral laws and start making up our own rules, which is basically why our society is in so much trouble. In short, Darwinism is very relevant – it's much more than a science matter.

Q: You, yourself, were an atheist for many years, were you not, as a result of evolutionary teaching?

A: That's right. I thought evolution had discredited the Bible. In my books, I give examples of notables who became atheists from being taught evolution, such as Stalin and Carnegie. In fact, the atheist Boy Scout who's been in the news reportedly attributes his atheism to being taught evolution.

Q: Why do you think evolution has such a persuasively negative effect on faith?

A: First, it's taught as "scientific fact." When kids hear "scientific fact," they think "truth." Who wants to go against truth? Second, it's the only viewpoint that's taught. After the Supreme Court kicked God out of schools in the '60s, kids heard the evolutionist viewpoint exclusively. It's like going to a courtroom – if you only heard the prosecutor's summation, you would probably think the defendant guilty. But if you only heard the defendant's attorney, you'd think "innocent." The truth is, we need to hear both sides, and kids haven't been getting it on the subject of origins.

Q: OK, then what?

A: The second chapter is "Evidence Against the Theory of Evolution." Let's face it, no matter what Darwinism's social ramifications, that alone would not be a sufficient basis to criticize it, if it were scientifically proven true.

Q: In a nutshell – if that's possible – what is the scientific evidence against Darwinism?

A: In the book, I focus on six areas of evidence. First, mutations – long claimed by evolutionists to be the building blocks of evolutionary change – are now known to remove information from the genetic code. They never create higher, more complex information – even in the rare cases of beneficial mutations, such as bacterial resistance to antibiotics. That has been laid out by Dr. Lee Spetner in his book "Not By Chance."

Q: What else?

A: Second, cells are now known to be far too complex to have originated by some chance concurrence of chemicals, as Darwin hypothesized and is still being claimed. We detail that in the book. Third, the human body has systems, such as blood clotting and the immune system, that are, in the words of biochemist Michael Behe, "irreducibly complex," meaning they cannot have evolved step-by-step. Behe articulated that in his book "Darwin's Black Box." And then there is the whole issue of transitional forms.

Q: What is a transitional form?

A: Darwin's theory envisioned that single-celled ancestors evolved into invertebrates (creatures without a backbone), who evolved into fish, who evolved into amphibians, who evolved into reptiles, who evolved into mammals. Now, a transitional form would be a creature intermediate between these. There would have to be a great many for Darwin's theory to be true.

Q: Are there?

A: There are three places to look for transitional forms. First, there's the living world around us. We see that it is distinctly divided – you have invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. But we don't see transitionals between them. If these creatures ever existed, why did none survive? It is too easy to explain it away by saying they all became extinct. And of course, there is the question: Why aren't these creatures evolving into each other today? Why aren't invertebrates evolving into fish today? Why aren't fish growing little legs and so forth?

Q: Where else would you look for a transitional form?

A: In the fossil record. And here we have a problem of almost comparable magnitude. We find no fossils showing how the invertebrates evolved, or demonstrating that they came from a common ancestor. That's why you hear of the "Cambrian explosion." And while there are billions of fossils of both invertebrates and fish, fossils linking them are missing. Of course, there are some transitional fossils cited by evolutionists. However, two points about that. First, there should be a lot more if Darwin's theory is correct. Second, 99 percent of the biology of an organism is in its soft anatomy, which you cannot access in a fossil – this makes it easy to invest a fossil with a highly subjective opinion. The Piltdown Man and the recent Archaeoraptor are examples of how easy it is to be misled by preconceptions in this arena.

Q: What is the other place where you can look for transitional forms?

A: Microscopically, in the cell itself. Dr. Michael Denton, the Australian molecular biologist, examined these creatures on a molecular level and found no evidence whatsoever for the fish-amphibian-reptile-mammal sequence. He summarized his findings in his book "Evolution: A Theory in Crisis."

The last chapter is "Re-evaluating Some Evidences Used to Support the Theory" of evolution. That would include evidences that have been discredited, and also some evidences presented as proof that in fact rest on assumptions.

Q: What evidences have been discredited?

A: Ernst Haeckel's comparative embryo drawings. The human body being laden with "vestigial structures" from our animal past. Human blood and sea water having the same percentage of salt. Babies being born with "monkey tails." These are not foundational evidences, but they still hold sway in the public mind.

Q: You mentioned assumptions as proofs.

A: Yes. Anatomical similarities between men and animals are said to prove common ancestry. But intelligent design also results in innumerable similarities, as in the case of two makes of automobile. Also, what has been called "microevolution" – minor adaptive changes within a type of animal – is extrapolated as evidence for "macroevolution" – the changing of one kind of animal into another. However, a species is normally endowed with a rich gene pool that permits a certain amount of variation and adaptation. Certainly, those things happen. But the change is ordinarily limited to the confines of the gene pool. It doesn't mean a fish could adapt its way into being a human.

Q: You covered a lot of this ground in "Tornado in a Junkyard." Can readers expect something new from "The Case Against Darwin"?

A: There is a bit of new material, but no, if you've read "Tornado," or for that matter, if you read the July 2001 Whistleblower, where we looked at evolution, you already know most of the points. What's new is the size. This is a book to give to a busy friend, a book for a high-school student to share with his science teacher.

This is an amazing thread. People who see some merit in evolution and people who believe in biblical-type creation take a thread that discusses the merits, or lack thereof, of the theory of evolution, and look what they do to it. They turn it into not only a forum for personal attacks on one another, but they also manage to infer from this narrow discussion that others hold views that can be classified as athiest, libertarian, anarchist, and I even saw a reference to the Taliban in there. Amazing.

I can see how the sun's energy ALLOWS counter-entropic development of life's organisms. But I certainly do not see any way that it explains it. Am I a moron? I am certainly not a gullible darwinite.

Well, I won't go so far as to call you a moron, but I think "Thick-headed" is apt. Since you obviously have not gone to the link provided to you regarding this 2nd Law of Thermo stuff, I'll cut and paste it for you. Bear in mind that this is directly from Answers in Genesis, a Creationist organization if there ever was one. They publish most of the books you undoubtedly have read:

‘The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics began at the Fall’. This law says that the entropy (‘disorder’) of the Universe increases over time, and some have thought that this was the result of the Curse. However, disorder isn’t always harmful. An obvious example is digestion, breaking down large complex food molecules into their simple building blocks. Another is friction, which turns ordered mechanical energy into disordered heat—otherwise Adam and Eve would have slipped as they walked with God in Eden! A less obvious example to laymen might be the sun heating the Earth—to a physical chemist, heat transfer from a hot object to a cold one is the classic case of the Second Law in action. Also, breathing is based on another classic Second Law process, gas moving from a high pressure to low pressure. Finally, all beneficial processes in the world, including the development from embryo to adult, increase the overall disorder of the universe, showing that the Second Law is not inherently a curse.

Death and suffering of nephesh animals before sin are contrary to the Biblical framework above, as are suffering (or ‘groaning in travail’ (Rom. 8:20–22)). It is more likely that God withdrew some of His sustaining power (Col. 1:15–17) at the Fall so that the decay effect of the Second Law was no longer countered.

A horse mated with a donkey makes a mule (although mules are unable to reproduce, some of the information gets crossed up, even though horses and donkeys are of the same species).

Sorry for coming in late, but I just noticed this. I'm interested in your definition of species. The offspring of a horse and a donkey is sterile and therefore unable to reproduce, yet you still consider horses and donkeys to be the same species? Are, say, jaguars and lions the same species? How about sheep (54 chromosomes) and goats (60 chromosomes)? Surely one wouldn't see the "information line up" in that case?

It seems like you are going to a rather absurd length to avoid recognizing a speciation event. Should horses and donkeys continue to drift apart to the extent that cross-breeding produces NO offspring, what will your argument be?

Now I may be mistaken. Modern theories are saying that the sun's radiation, the earth's radiation, environmental changes, and virus' have the ability to code DNA. (alter DNA)

These forces have no intelligence so they must use a hit and miss method of success. Natural selection improves the success rates.

Can scientists, who have intelligence, reproduce these events in the laboratory?

The radiation from my monitor ruins my eyes. The Microsoft programmers still can't stop windows from locking up. The virus' I am familiar with have destroyed either my tissues, or my hard drive. (selfish little parasites)

Good thing radiation and environmental changes never alter my jar of peanut butter. I could never unworriedly have a P&J sandwich again. Those little organic jars sit around for years.

Maybe the information from life getting into those jars is required to get this little experiment going. I still think there are to many holes in the theory to rely on it for a sense of understanding.

My only point is that the information in DNA of various types of animals does not mix together as tidily as evolution seems to presuppose.

Billions of years is not enough time, neither would be trillions of years.

Actually, it does. And an equivalent number of chromosomes is not necessary to combine different species' egg and sperm. The only question is whether, or when, the whole organism goes haywire and dies or causes an abortion (usually in embryonic development).

From a statistical probability perspective a few haywire events quickly shuts down the whole process. Dead ends are not so easily explained away by the mantra called TIME.

The sophisticated labs studying these processes should easily come up with a model that is provable.

When they grow an eye, then show how nature did the same thing without help from intelligence, we will begin to acknowledge the possibility that evolution may be possible.

Do you know how hard it would be for scientists to grow an eye using the necessary raw materials? The sun shined on the pimple on the worm, mutating the pimple to be aware of light. 100,000 years later the worm’s descendant caught a virus, which nudged that magically light aware pimple, which for some reason was passed on all those years, to develop cones. Then a bird with hollow bones, but blind, ate the worm, which passed on the virus that makes cones. But the bird lacked a pimple. AAWWWW We need another billion years.

These scientists got some explaining to do.

My summary was truncated, and Tolkien enthusiasts might fairly raise objections. I note with pleasure that no Wagnerians yet have written to complain, validating the observation that Tolkien has taken back the Ring on behalf of the forces of light. If you prefer Wagner to Tolkien, you might be an Orc, and you should . . . seek (( link )) - - - professional help ! ! !

Unfortunately, you could prove to the FR evolutionists that the earth is round, show them the satelite photos, take them for a spin around the planet and they'd still say,

"Been there, done that, refuted it several times, where's your evidence?"

The public schools no longer teach logic nor do state collges introduce the subject in philosophy. We're dealing with underdeveloped minds incapable of drawing a conclusion from details. Rather they force details to conform to their conclusion.

Yes and you can post time and time again refutations to the psuedoscience claims of FR creationists, take them through it step by step, show them DNA research, direct DNA evidence, prove that even "most" creationists accept microevolution, prove the earth is older than 6000 years old, and give them a guided tour of the last 4.5 billion years and what do you get for your trouble...... They spout "No you Didn't prove anything" , God is creator and the Earth is 6000 years old, a few lame insults about evolutionist's lack of insight or intelligence, and finally they close their eyes and scream "NO NO NO I won't listen!!!".

Sorry, exactly which question were you attempting to answer? You said that horses and donkeys were the same species. I'm trying to find out how you made that determination, and if you would say that sheep and goats, for example, are members of the same species.

And would you mind clarifying your point with regards to length of time?

Donkeys, horses, and zebras are all members of the family "equus" - that is to say they are all Equines.

horse (Equus caballus)

donkey (Equus asinus)

zebra (Equus burchellii)

When you cross a horse and a donkey, you get a hybrid. Mules are the result of crossing a jack (male) donkey with a mare (female) horse. Mules can be either male or female - males are Horse mules, females are Mare mules.

The opposite cross is called a hinny - a stallion horse to a jennet (mare) donkey. Horse hinny, mare hinny. Both mules and hinnies are anatomically normal, but sterile.

-

Kingdom: Living things can be placed in four Kingdoms: Virus, Bacteria, Plant, and Animal.

Phylum: There are more than 30 phyla in the Animal Kingdom and 9 or 10 in the Plant Kingdom. Phylum Chordata is the one we're most familiar with -- it includes humans, birds, fish, and all other animals with a backbone. Phylum Arthropoda includes insects, spiders, lobsters, etc.

Class: The various phyla are divided into classes -- Phylum Chordata is divided in mammalia, aves (birds), etc.

Order: Scientific groupings don't follow hard and fast rules. Once we get to the "order" of a living thing, there sometimes begins to be some disagreement about where it belongs. You may find that different sources group creatures in different orders or families.

Family

Genus: Two or more species that share unique body structures or other characteristics are considered to be closely related and are placed together in a genus. Sometimes a genus might include only a single species if there is nothing else in the world that has similarities with it. The genus is the first part of the scientific name of a species.

Species: A species can be defined as a group of individuals that breed together to produce fertile offspring. Individuals of a species cannot breed with other such groups. It is sometimes possible for different species to breed, but the offspring will be sterile. A mule is the sterile offspring of a donkey and a horse, and the mule can never mate and reproduce itself. The species is the second part of the scientific name of a species.

Seems to be a common use/misuse of the word species.

Although the Second Law may pose little direct threat to the theory of evolution, it implies that the universe had a definite beginning, and that matter is not eternal.

Spontaneous generation has been disproved. Evolution has not been proved. Evolution is a forensic science and will always remian a speculative one. I see it as a scholastic endeavor where creative (pun intended) minds reconstruct ancient and unrepeatable singularities in what appears to them a coherent theory. Although these singularities(like the fossil record)qualify as evidence, they are none-the-less poen to differing interpretations.

Spontaneous generation has been disproved.

That's a common misunderstanding of Pasteur's work. The problem he was working on was spoilation of food, and he showed that mold on food arose only after exposure to the air, and that sealed foods didn't spoil. Before Pasteur, it was believed that mold (and maggots too) "spontaneously generated" in the food, but Pasteur showed that this is not the case. This has nothing to do with the question usually raised in these threads -- the appearance of the first living matter from non-living matter.

That is why atheists and materialists cannot come up with any reasonable hypothesis for life arising from non-living matter which fits what is scientifically known about life. -me-

There is certainly nothing definitive currently on the table with regards to the origin of life.

There is that life was intelligently designed and it cannot be disproven even by a hypothesis. The fact is that the more we have learned about life the more unlikely abiogenesis becomes. If one is talking science then one must say that abiogenesis is false.

However, it may interest you to learn that origin of life is, in actuality, a separate area of investigation than the theory of evolution.

It was written out by Huxley after Pasteur's experiment showed that life does not come from non-life. Darwin played with the idea. More importantly though if God exists, then evolution cannot say that God did not create man as it so violently insists.

Your's is the missunderstanding. You are confusing Needham and later Spallanzani's experiments with Pasteur. Pasteur's winning experiment was a variation of their methods. He boiled meat broth in a flask, heated the neck of the flask in a flame until it became pliable, and bent it into the shape of an S. Air could enter the flask, but airborne microorganisms could not - they would settle by gravity in the neck. As Pasteur had expected, no microorganisms grew. When Pasteur tilted the flask so that the broth reached the lowest point in the neck, where any airborne particles would have settled, the broth rapidly became cloudy with life. Pasteur had both refuted the theory of spontaneous generation and convincingly demonstrated that microorganisms are ubiquitous.even in the air.

Spontaneous generation has not been proved. This statement revolves around the posts of rmmcdaniells. Regards.
