Many if not most formal proofs involve cases being eliminated by showing that they logically imply things which are known to be untrue, and all such steps amount to proving negatives.

Such proofs merely demonstrate that the original proposition can be contradicted. Not quite the same thing as proving that there's no tooth fairy.
