Mexican Consulate Opens In Downtown Indianapolis. (Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish)

The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis will be open for business Monday. It's an office that will serve a group of people that's growing rapidly in our city and state. Mayor Bart Peterson's office has worked for about two years with the Mexican government and the state of Indiana to get this consulate opened.

You don't have to look hard to see why the consulate is needed. Drive down Washington Street a few miles west of downtown, and you'll see the fruits of our Hispanic and Latino community's labor. Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish. There are now some 34,000 Latinos and Hispanics in Indianapolis, and 60% of them are Mexican.

"We have an education system that welcomes the immigrants and we like the way we are treated because we find that the American community is welcoming in general," said Roberto Curci, La Guia Magazine.

The city even has two publications geared toward this growing community. "The Voice of Indiana," a bilingual newspaper and "The Guide of Indianapolis," a magazine for Hispanics and Latinos. There's even a new Hispanic and Latino yellow pages.

Local businesses are forging ties with that community. Kroger just donated a van to the Hispanic Center of Indianapolis to thank them for translation help that the center has provided for the grocery chain.

"As we change and we are changing as a city, I think it was important for business to recognize that and we have recognized it," said Jeff Golc, Kroger.

The change will continue. Just ask the woman who helps run the grocery store on West Washington Street. New Hispanic and Latino customers come in for her authentic products all the time.

"Like once in a while there will be somebody new that comes. You know, like, "Oh, we just moved here and we came to see how it is." So yeah, we always get new people that come here," said Irasema Delgado, store manager.

The Mexican Consulate will serve three states: Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. It will serve as the Mexican government's primary link with those states on issues such as immigration, trade and economic development.

In Indiana, in order to run a grocery store one must file for a retail merchant's certificate. If one is not a citizen one must provide evidence of legal immigrant status. Period.

I know this because I myself have a retail merchant's certificate. Of course, one is free to ignore my comment on this and check it out at the Indiana Secretary of State's office.

AND, one may also ignore people like you, who never offer any sort of discussion except an attempt to bully, mock, and intimidate people.

LOL! LOL! Sorry to laugh Ms Marple, but I unfortunatley I have to deal with fraud once in a while, and our country has been so GD flooded with fraud from these people, that it would make your Indiana head spin.

And the worst part is, most of our elected officials know it.

LOL good one Joe. We ain't going anywhere.......regardless of whether we speak Spanish or not.......this is still an American country, and in America you cannot be forced to learn a language from another country or be sued....

at least not yet.

I see. Even if the paperwork is in order, it is fraud. Even if they are legal, they are still part of the invasion.

I think I understand. Thank you for the explanation.

Hahahahah.......LOL! If you only knew. Let me tell you, in a city like Los Angeles for instance, the fraud committed by illegal aliens, Chinese, Mexicans, from Viet Nam etc etc, is so out of control and complicated its unreal. Not only that, our elected officials, once they are made aware of the massive fraud, are very hesitant to do a damn thing about it. It is so bad, and so wide spread, it's almost beyond control.

You're welcomed.

I know having clean, safe attractive neighborhoods that employee people isn't everyone's cup of tea. Trashing, crime ridden slums are so much more "American" I guess.

Well, aren't you the lucky one. You got all of the good criminals. Why don't you come down to Hall County, Ga.

If you do we can go down to Atlanta Hwy. in Gainesville and I can get you any type of papers you want. You need SS card? Got it. You need to be a citizen? I'm sure if we look really hard we can find that too. I can proably get you a retail merchant's certificate, for Indiana. And you will feel right at home on Atlanta Hwy. Nothing but Spanish stores and spanish signs. Of course, we have over a 100 gangs here too. A huge drug problem just up the road in Dalton with the Cartels. Men standing at the local stores yelling obscenities at women. Or how about just relieving themselves where ever. Schools overloaded. Welfare offices completely full but none of them speak English. Hospitals going broke.

Yes , you are mighty lucky that all the good illegals came to your town. Maybe we should share some of ours with you and you might not be as happy. Ya think?

You bet, it's the American citizens that have perpetrated all of this lawlessness and fraud.

Good observation....

Exactly right ---the Poles and other immigrants didn't have to move their governments in with them throughout the US. The allegiance is not to the US but to a foreign country.

I like most of the Mexican grocery stores I've been in.

You could move to Mexico ---you might find things there more to your liking. They have real good tortilla chips there ---everywhere.

It's obvious that you never visited the area three-four years ago. Or you could be the kind who enjoys being mugged as long as it's done by your kind of American. It's apparent you don't like to see a community improve itself as long as it stays an "American" looking crime ridden slum.

It's why the Apodaca kid who was illegally in Colorado had the Mexican Consulate intervene in his behalf when he demanded in-state tuition in the college there. They didn't offer him any free or reduced college tuition in Mexico, they demanded the American taxpayers fork it over.

Miss Marple said that it was so nice to drive through the neighborhoods now, what with the families, the couples and people working on their cars instead of the way it was, just drug dealers.

Now, if this was a neighborhood, then more than just drug dealers lived there. There had to be families there. Did these lovely criminals run the other people out? They have done this before. Maybe Miss Marple didn't like the former tenats for a reason. Who knows.

Where do you think most of the drugs are coming from? Who brings cocaine, heroin, marijuana into the US? Which is the biggest drug dealing country in the world?
