I thought one of the roles of government was to protect the citizens of the nation. I know many do not view the unborn child as a 'citizen' but I do and think it is perfectly right and acceptable for the government to protect that child from being murdered.

If you consider abortion murder, then that is a State charge. Not a Federal one. The Constitution is pretty clear on what a "Federal Crime" is.

You might want to re-read the Constitution. There is no individual Constitutional Right to have the Government protect them from craddle to grave. Article III, Sec. 2 is pretty clear about what belong to the State judiciary.
