Because then it allowed you to think you were doing something bad and naughty, huh? Kinky. Heh, well it certainly was more of an achievement back then, more of a challenge. Nowadays, much of the fun has been taken out of it.. (well, ok, it still is plenty of fun, but ya know what I mean?)
