And Margaret Thatcher, for all her greatness, also turned her back on Rhodesia in 1979-80. She assured the (by then) multi-racial government that an election that included the guerillas would be free and fair, and then refused to recognize that Mugabe’s thugs were running free and terrorizing the African voters. The amount of African support for the Muzorewa transitional government was pretty high before the election, then suddenly Mugabe “won.”
