Trump's small-dollar donor fundraising is beset by confusion and fatigue

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump’s contributions from small-dollar donors have plummeted since his last White House campaign, presenting the former president with a financial challenge as he tries to keep pace with the Democrats' fundraising machine.

Trump’s fundraising dip raises questions about the party’s ability to continue tapping its aging base for funds. Such voters often live on fixed incomes and don’t have the extra cash to contribute to candidates, and polls have consistently found that the Republican base is growing older.

Republicans also engaged in a hyperaggressive — often combative — style of digital fundraising that is alienating voters, the operatives said.

“Republican vendors have so mistreated our donors that many grassroots donors don’t want to give to us anymore,” said John Hall, a Republican fundraising consultant and partner at Apex Strategies.

Small-dollar donors echoed Hall's concerns. They told the AP they stopped giving to Trump's campaign because they were tired of being barraged with solicitations for donations from other Republicans, who presumably got the donor information from the Trump campaign.

“I am sick of them asking for money,” said Susan Brito, 51, of Florida, who gave dozens of small donations totaling $69 in 2022 and 2023 but hasn't contributed this year. ”I am disabled, you are sending me text, after text, after text.”

Bill Ruggio, 70, donated nearly every month, a total of $60, to Trump's campaign over 2022 and 2023. He hasn't contributed anything this year, saying he doesn't have the extra cash and is deeply frustrated by a barrage of text messages he receives from the Republican candidates and committees.

I posted this story because I am one of those former doners to Trump. I donated during his 2016 campaign and I am getting up to 10 fundraising texts per day, all from different phone numbers. I try blocking them but the fundraising just switches phone numbers. Furthermore, the text themselves are dishonest. I have received messages purportedly from Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Melinia Trump and I believe Ivanka Trump. But the majority of texts are purportedly from Donald Trump, who tries a variety of attempts to fundraise--he is concerned because he hasn't heard from me, he noticed my name was not on the list of his supporters, etc. I think these messages are borderline fraudulent because I know that Trump is not writing them himself and he did not notice my name was on some list. So why is he clai8ming that he notices I am not on the doner list. And if he is lying to me about his matter, what other matters are he lying to me about? The Bible teaches us it is wrong to lie. It is a sin to lie. In Ephesians 4:25, the Apostle Paul, while a prisoner in Rome, wrote to the Christian believers in the ancient Greek city of Ephesus, "So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth... " Although I will still vote for Trump, it is more of an anti-democrat vote than a pro-Trump vote. I am wondering if others on FR are experiencing this.

I agree that political fundraising in general is shady, but the stakescare too high right now.

Hold your nose and give.

I HATE how campaign consultants treat the Republican base.

I’m sick and tired of all the solicitations.
The more you contribute the more they ask.

So I quit.

Who thought that insulting your base in these texts would lead to an increase in fundraising?!

I donated a few years ago but I get up to 15 rude texts a day.

What an idiotic fundraising strategy!

I'm getting about 20-30 fund raising texts daily. For all I know, they're scammers trying to get money by using Trump's name or someone else running for office. I never reply or donate this way.

If I want to donate to someone's campaign, I do so directly through their website.

I get A LOT of texts everyday. I don't block the numbers because they could eventually be real numbers. I'm not sure if the texts are legit or not but, I would never send money through a text. I go right to the candidate's site.

But I AM voting FOR Trump. My man took a bullet to the head, lost money as president, and forgo a cushy retirement for this country. Dude's the real deal.

I don’t believe all the fundraising texts we receive are from the Trump campaign or even anyone affiliated with the GOP. A lot of the texts are scams or even Democrats hoping to get conservatives to send them their hard-earned dollars.

We’re talking about $2 donations here. Elections aren’t decided by that.

It’s axiomatic to say that once you donate anything to anyone, you’re marked as a “donor”... and you’ll henceforth be solicited for more donations... forever. But, hey, no one is holding a gun to your head. If you don’t want to donate, don’t donate. It is not that hard.

Conservatives are at an inherent disadvantage in fundraising because we’re generally more fiscally prudent people. There are left-wingers out there with negative net worth who’ll still donate $500 to defeat Trump. From a personal finance standpoint, that’s irrational. But they’re far more committed to us losing than most of us are to winning.

I don’t care about the texts.

In 2020 I gave several thousand dollars to various candidates.

Problem is the money is not there anymore.

Go to get some groceries and they are at least 25% more expensive and that’s according to the government. The real number is probably around 50%+.

In my view Trump has been badly advised on the langauge of his fundraising Emails, which I get two, three or four a day. From them you would think that DJT and DJT alone, not MAGA, is 100% of what the election is about. The Emails are all Trump, Trump, Trump and much less the ideas and policies we need. “Don’t you want to meet me a Mar A Lago”?, “Don’t you want a Trump coffee mug”. “I really want to meet you ........, persoanlly at Mar a Lago”. ect, ect, ect, as if it’s all about having a personal relationship with Trump. That is 100% of the tone of all the Emails I get from his organization every day.

Hey, I have never voted for or donated to someone because I am a “fan” and wish to have that public-celebrity relationship.

Oh STOP IT! Quit your whining. Holy cow. All my texts I get there is an opt out way. Reply STOP. I don’t donate to them because I don’t trust who they come from. I get 2 to 5 a day. It will be over soon. Then you can revel in the communism of the United States. But lets hope not. To big to steal! Now go vote for Trump!

“...it is more of an anti-democrat vote than a pro-Trump vote...”

Then don’t vote if the lie is more important to you than understanding how things work and lying for the reason you vote. No candidate does everything that is done. This is why he/she hires people and gets volunteers. And you already know that because you said so in your entry. No president does either using the same plan.

You are the reason Trump is running. The liberal party has made a concerted effort to keep the low wagers down for a number of decades by trapping them in the welfare and social security system for the wrong reasons. You keep your head above water because they let you as they need your vote and lie to get it. And they are doing it again right now.

A political party cannot save an economy. The consumer does that. So if the party wishes to control the economy downward they scare the middle class and lower by telling them they are under attack by the top 10% and they are going to punish them with taxes while sitting on their white horse. But if the top 10 was not there, there would be no economy.

But let’s get something straight, you can’t hurt the big guy. If you cost him money, the middle and lower class will just be made lower, unemployed, and living from welfare check to check. And then uncle sugar has you. So the economy dips, the big guy is still on top making adjustments, and the government closes their grip on your and others throats.

Be happy there is still an option to vote for something closer to prosperity. It ain’t perfect, but it’s one step above the iron maiden the liberals would have you strapped into. And I’ve been to a number of third world countries where that option wasn’t there. While Trump was in office you could be a little more comfortable with the more he got you with the economy, that should have earned his vote alone. It did many.

Just ten, I am getting something like 100-200.
Frankly, I am donating, but not to Trump.
I figured out, that my money go lot further, if I donate to local candidates.
