The Washington Democrats’ plan to ban the most popular tires won’t advance during this legislative session. But you shouldn’t think for a moment that the plan won’t eventually come to fruition. It’s not dead — it’s just in a different form.
House Bill 2262 has emerged as the latest legislative head-scratcher. It aims to steer us toward a greener horizon by mandating low-rolling resistance tires on passenger vehicles.
All other tires, which include the vast majority of the ones currently used by drivers, would be banned. Violate their tire ban, and you’d be subject to a fine of up to $10,000 per occurrence.
This bill compromises road safety for environmental virtue signaling, and it will be incredibly costly and inconvenient. The tires Democrats would force on us are not as safe in wet weather, are more expensive, would need to be replaced for often (costing us even more money), and would need to be switched out twice a year for snow tires for drivers who head over the passes during the winter.
It doesn’t make much sense, earning an icy reception from The Wall Street Journal.
Democrats don’t seem to mind. They introduced the Washington tire ban to get used to yet another dictum on how we live our lives, so when it is eventually enacted, we’re less likely to push back. And they’ll push it through whenever they have an opportunity to exploit, which is why it’ll be introduced every year until they can get away with it.
In fact, it’s already been snuck back into an unrelated electric vehicle bill by State Senator Marko Liias. He was able to do this without a public comment or hearing because nothing shouts transparency like Democrat secrecy.
They don’t want to spend much time debating these issues before it becomes law. Even if the Liias attempt ultimately fails, Democrats use the disingenuous excuse that it was discussed years earlier when it was initially introduced (and then forgotten). It’s virtually the same script they wrote regarding the ban on the sale of gas-powered vehicles or using plastic bags.
“At the end of the day, we’re facing a climate crisis, and we need to use as many possible tools to get ourselves out of that,” Rep. Chipalo Street, D-Seattle, argued. “This is one way to increase the gas efficiency of some of our vehicles.”
Yet, Street and his allies conveniently gloss over a critical detail. The tires they want to sideline, under the guise of environmental stewardship, are the very ones that have kept us safe on Washington’s wet and hilly roads.
It seems that in Olympia’s quest for environmentally friendly policies, our safety has taken a backseat. In a state fighting to release sex offenders custody, keep violent juveniles out of jail, and stop police from policing, we can’t be too surprised that Democrat lawmakers push their eco-ideology over our well-being on the roads.
I am now waiting for the Dems in the other Washington to replace candidate Biden with Inslee
Government controlling the private market-—what could go wrong there?
No doubt some politician is getting a kickback for doing this but do you think our media would be interested in pursuing a story like this - Crickets!!!
Well Washingtonians, you voted for this insanity. Do you feel so much more virtuous than us, now?
It is time to slice this country down the west coast, about 100 miles inland. Create Californiastan and isolate your virtual-signally experiment from the rational folks.
Climate change is their pagan god.
Wife: "I just replaced the Tesla tires last week."
Husband: "I know, but this new type of tire wears out after about a week."
Seattle is filled with old VWs, Chevy Cavaliers, S-10 Pickups, Ford Escorts, Plymouth Sundances, etc. Many of these vehicles have very limited tire selection.
Such tires must of necessity be very rigid, throwing the calibration of the cars’ suspensions (spring rates, preloads, damping) all off. The cars will ride very harsh, and failures of wheel bearings, axles, possibly brake components, will increase. Never mind that they will have terrible traction when braking. Large increases in collisions can be expected.
I live in NW Montana (thank God). Washington state is lost to the dark side. I used to have hope for Spokane until they elected the dwarf troll libtard Lisa Brown as mayor. That’s the beginning of the end for those folks.
I will just go to Idaho to get new tires. I doubt enforcement of this tire bill would even happen, being as the Democrats chased the police out of this state. I can smoke fentanyl in public, shoplift at will, steal a car and nothing happens.
The legislature even tried to outlaw gas lawn equipment, stating that it was harmful to the environment. The person sponsoring that bill also owns a car dealership. If passed, that would have also meant an Idaho trip.
I am so sick of these crazies running this state. My vote means nothing.
i just want a tire that goes 250,000 miles and ride nice, and grip in ice and snow and never hydroplane, and after 250,000 disintegrates into compost for the garden- is that too much to ask?
One of the lesser known but big draw backs of EV’s is the huge increase in tire wear. They use big expensive tires that last half as long if you are lucky. I cannot imagine how quickly an EV would shred these idiotic “earth friendly” tires.
I think Seattle and King County voted for this insanity. The rest of us (a numeric minority) are $#@! sick of their insanity and the Seattle progressive ideology.
Can we start a petition to REMOVE Oregon, Washington, California and Delaware from the union?
These four states contain such a level of mental deficiency that just having them in the union lowers the average IQ of the US by 60-80 points.
Lets just declare these states as “institutions.” Since these states are FULL of MENTALLY DEFICIENTS, these mentally deficients, aka DEMOCRATS belong in an institution for their and our safety!!!!
We need to consolidate.
For example, Unite the Dakotas, Carolinas and Virginias.
Take all those tiny states in the Northeast and combine them, I mean do we really need Delaware and Rhode Island?
Look at bicycle racing tires.
Very narrow, and 110 psi.
Low rolling resistance.
Put these on your car.
The planet will be saved.
Next is special tires for tractors.
Can’t have those big, lugged, gas-eating tires on the tractors.
Get the bicycle type narrow, high psi on them, too.
And make sure CHP has the slick, low traction tires, for economy in persuits. If persuit is still allowed.
Elections matter, no sympathy here.
OMG ... moved from there 2 years ago. I would not have been able to climb the hill to my house in summer without good tires, and I lived just outside of Seattle.
Your new steel belted tire is literally that. 1 Steel belt, no rubber. Does not grip the road for shit, but is has a very low coefficient of friction and only needs to be replaced ... well, when the rest of the car is replaced. Unless it rusts.
