The Irish have a strong anti-colonial bent. During the troubles that preceded Congo obtaining independence, Irish UN troops sided with the natives and against the Belgian settlers, who were white and Catholic, just like the Irish. Then we have to recognize that there were many Axis sympathizers in Ireland during World War II. Perhaps not a majority, but significant enough. Many thousands of Irishmen did volunteer to join the British Army.

If you look at Soviet rhetoric during the cold war, one of their favorite themes was so-called anti-colonialism.
