The bedbug plague in France has seen families in Marseille dump their infested mattresses out into the streets in a bid to rid themselves of the pests.
The French government is battling to contain a bout of nationwide panic, after several schools were closed across the country due to the infestation.
Footage shows residents walking past discarded mattresses in one of the streets in France's second largest city, with some of the items lying in the road and others propped up against buildings
Government officials were holding an emergency meeting on Friday on how to tackle a crisis borne out of anecdote and viral posts on social media, and which is now filling talk show airtime - even if pest-control experts remain largely nonplussed.
Rail travellers, cinemagoers and US influencers in Paris for Fashion Week were among those reporting seeing the bugs, or being bitten by them.
Leftist lawmaker Mathilde Panot took a vial she said contained bedbugs into parliament.
She told French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne bedbugs were everywhere and she lambasted the government for inaction.
'Madame prime minister, these little insects are spreading despair in our country. Do we need to wait for Matignon (PM's office) to become infested before you act,' Panot said.
Sniffer dogs are inspecting French trains and the Paris metro for bedbugs, though so far not a single one has been found on public transport, the country's transport minister, Clement Beaune, said.
Beaune met last week with transportation companies to draw up a plan for monitoring and disinfecting - and to try to ease what some have called a national psychosis inflamed by the media.

Gee,I wonder why.
thank the neoCON open borders scum who colluded with liberals to destroy Western Civilization because “muh diversity”
It’s obvious the hotel owners need to spring for all new bedding and accommodations for their refugee guests...
There is a simple solution... they are called insecticides. Most are much more dangerous to bed bugs than people.
Glad I hung on to my Dursban.
three little letters will fix it. DDT.
France: Bed-buuuugs!!!
Israel: Sigh.
(Even worse, if you bring back DDT, millions of black Africans will not die of malaria. We're counting on that to keep their numbers down.)
Read a good article that states you should put your luggage in the bathtub, inspect the bed for bb activity before unpacking in a hotel room.
The warm air blows across France from the mediterranean sea.
The French are known not to bath on a regular basis.
The Germans can smell the French on warm days.
This has always bothered the Germans.
If you look closely at photos of the beginning of WW1 and WW2, you will see German soldiers marching with a rifle in one hand and a bar of soap in the other......
WW3 may start because of bedbugs!
A little clarified butter with garlic and, in France, problem solved
Two letters will do it. DE. Diatomaceous earth.
The leftists of the world ended DDT use which was used to eradicate bedbugs in the past. That is one reason for their return.
I am sure the big bedbugs crawling through open borders and massive migration have made it even worse.
WW1 was a hundred years ago.
I was near a group of German tourists in Costa Rica a couple of years ago.
Their lack of hygiene was disgusting.
“Two letters will do it. DE. Diatomaceous earth.”
A few years ago on FR, there were threads about food grade DE to deal with parasites. I wonder if that would’ve been helpful during Covid. Ivermectin also deals with parasites. Inquiring minds want to know.
People do not want to inhale or ingest DE.
“People do not want to inhale or ingest DE.”
There is food grade DE that people do ingest. There were a few threads about that around 5-10 years ago. Many had used it. I never “went there”.
I have a large bottle of this stuff I used on ants. It is supposedly food grade but is full of warnings on the bottle.
I have lung issues so I am always alert to these warnings.
All those bed bugs immigrated...just saying.
