Low poll ratings mattered a lot more when Election Day votes were all that mattered. With massive numbers of ballots harvested from low-information voters who will tend to vote for one party regardless of what's going on in the world, polls matter a lot less.

It doesn't matter what the polls say in late October 2024, let alone May 2023. Trump, DeSantis, Scott, whoever the Republican nominee is - unless he has his own effective ballot harvesting mechanism in place to offset at least some of the ballot dump Biden will get after the polls close, the Republican nominee will lose.
