A dirt bike rider is fighting for his life after he was tasered by a police officer while pumping gas at a Florida gas station, causing the pump to explode and him to be 'cooked alive' in a giant fireball, his attorneys say.
An internal investigation is currently underway over the Osceola County Sheriff's' handling of the incident.
Meanwhile Barretto, who was reportedly targeted because he attended a banned motorbike enthusiast event that was broken up by cops, is set to be put in a medically induced coma as he undergoes more intense treatment
The department recently adopted a zero-tolerance policy forbidding such rallies, lawyers for Barretto say. They are demanding the state take over the investigation and hold the officers involved accountable. The deputy has yet to be named.
The department has refused to provide body camera footage and incident reports chronicling the incident.
Video shows Barretto pumping gas into his motorbike outside the Orange County Wawa where the explosion would eventually occur, after he had stopped to get gas following the rally in Osceola County.
The footage the shows the unidentified officer deploy his Taser at Barretto, who was on the ground at the time. The shot then sets off a chain reaction causing the gas pump Barretto had been at to explode.
Police refused to turn over footage of the incident from the officers' body-cameras, and have yet to identify the deputies involved, pending an internal investigation.
Lawyers for Barretto are demanding the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and US Department of Justice take over the probe, and begin an investigation into the protocols, practices, policies, and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
Barretto was not armed

I have driven many govt issued vehicles. I never knew or asked how many cylinders they had.
What is your point?
Saying this is going to blow up in DeSantis’ face...underscores the fact that you have no idea who DeSantis is or how he operates.
It’s nikki fried’s face on every gas pump in Florida. If it blows up in her face fried will be the one fried.
Good article.
the family didn’t know what happened, why Barreto was in the hospital or why deputies were standing guard at the door outside his room at the hospital.
The Cops must have thought public enemy #1 was going to get up and escape or something.
Definitely some Mensa candidates in that department.
It is well known that a taser can ignite a fluid combustible. This is not a new phenom.
But, I do wonder how the doofus spilled gas all over himself while filling up a little bitty gas tank on a cycle. What, he’s never done that before?
If that is the scenario, then the copper is more of a doofus if he could smell gas and still tazed.
Also, how come a gas pump blew up? What the ‘Ell!
What we have is an accidental burning. As it has been described, it seems the officer was about at risk as much as the motorcyclist.
Bad things happen. Not everything is planned or certain. The judgement of the officer can be questioned. It is hard to see how he can be convicted of intentionally causing the fire.
We do not know if excessive force was used.
Outlaw motocyclists routinely outrun police and get away. That is why they feel they can flout the law.
Deputy should have known about the gas and what gas can do when ignited by a spark and there is sufficient oxygen. This deserves a charge of at least negligent homicide, if the unfortunate man dies.
Cops are supposed to protect the public.
Not true. Outlaw motorcyclists do it, and put everyone else at risk, routinely.
Some have outrun helicopters.
Often, the bikes are stolen.
“Blow up in his face” is a lousy way to describe your expected outcome.
Do you think Desantis is “in this up to his neck”?
I’m trying to be clinical in my reasoning without saying the cop’s an asshole ..... but’ch’all forcin’ my hand.
See my #71
Look at the video. The cop tackled the guy WHILE he was filing his tank. Gasoline spewing everywhere, and the taser ignited the fumes. It’s in the fire marshal report.
You can see the cop running at the guy from behind. The biker had no clue he was there. The cop could have easily broke the guys neck into the gas pump with that version of the knockout game.

There will be a new law requiring signs to be posted on all gas dispensers.
DO NOT ARREST CRIMINALS WHILE FILLING GAS TANKS.
Problem solved by politicians............
If not this, there will be some law passed.
Doesn’t look good in any way for the cop... unarmed man pumping gas
= = =
But the gas may have been sanctioned Russian gas.
meanwhile, burns are worse than torture.
this cop, himself, is liable.
Didn’t I just say the cop’s an asshole ?
What you don’t see is that those people are caught within an hour or so. They know it and the cops know it.
And they would outrun a 6 cylinder as fast as an V8.
The question is a 1950’s question. I wouldn’t expect many cops to know or care what the answer is. 99% of jurisdictions are not allowed to chase these days—for exactly the reason you give.
Those that do must have high insurance premiums.
Well many police departments limit the IQ scores of applicants.“Any police department (or university faculty, or military unit, etc.) is only as good as the worst psycho they tolerate.” ~ H/T RedStateRockerWell, many police departments hire applicants who FAILED their psychiatric evaluations. Challenge me on this if you dare! My source did these evaluations, in Florida!
That line from Raylan Givens was my first thought.
