Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday pledged the White House's new Disinformation Governance Board will not be used to monitor American citizens, despite mounting Republican concerns that it will be a tool for censorship and surveillance.
'There are people in the department who have a diverse range of views, and they’re incredibly dedicated to the mission,' he said when pledging the board will not step on free speech.
Mayorkas also defended the board's new head Nina Jankowicz, a Russian disinformation expert who previously advised the Ukrainian government, from a slew of Republican accusations of hyperpartisanship.
He lauded her as 'eminently qualified' and a 'renowned expert in the field of disinformation.'
Republicans like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have compared it to the 'Ministry of Truth' in George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, claiming it's being done to silence right-wing voices.
'It's clear I mean, those criticisms are precisely the opposite of what this small working group within the Department of Homeland Security will do,'
However, he acknowledged that the Biden administration 'probably could have done a better job of communicating what it does and does not do.'
'The fact is that disinformation that creates a threat to the security of the homeland is our responsibility to address, and this department has been addressing it for years.'
(DHS) announced last week that it was creating the board in a bid to crack down on disinformation coming from Russia as well as disinformation spread by human smugglers to encourage migrants to attempt to cross the southern border.
'The board -- this working group, internal working group -- will draw from best practices and communicate those best practices to the operators, because the board does not have operational authority.'
The Biden official gave a firm 'no' when asked whether Americans will be monitored.

And by that, Mayorkas means they will monitor American citizens only when absolutely necessary - like when someone criticizes a Democrat or a Democrat policy.

That is a total lie, and he knows it. They created this new KGB to monitor the thoughts and words of Americans who disagree with the left’s agenda. Its purpose is to suppress dissident thoughts and words, and to identify those who think or say them, and to target them for destruction.
Before the 2020 election they met with the heads of “social media” to tell them to suppress dissident thoughts and to promote those that met the party’s requirements. That wasn’t enough for them. They released a deadly virus while they were impeaching Trump and turned it into an international crisis. Its purpose was to identify and punish Christians and Republicans, who they thought were uniformly opposed to the vax. That had the additional effect of conditioning the public for open monitoring and suppression of thoughts and words.
Two things in particular triggered the current action: Trump’s Truth Social, and Musk’s purchase of twitter. They had lost some control over our thoughts and words, and wanted to get it back.
Being nazis at heart, it was easy for them to create the Ministry of Truth to monitor the thoughts and words of the American public and to reward loyal party members and to punish those who would not conform.
These are the people who organized, promoted and supported the 2020 riots, giving rioters a free pass to steal, burn, rape and kill. These are the people who threw people into solitary who were in Washington on Jan 6.
Corporations will be given spying software meeting federal needs.
Yes it will be in a roundabout way. It will monitor all media on the internet and over the airways and punish any of those entities that report anything other than the view established by this administration. They will drag them into court or into congress committees to harass until they give up.
We will probably see the total elimination of comments across the board.
But no, they won’t be spying on individual citizens, that is already covered by the intel agencies.
Will the GOP stop this? They accept the lying RATS explanations. I hear crickets.
How ironic? Orwellian Newspeak is used to describe just the opposite. So this falls right in line with being exactly what Orwell described.
"Best practices" where? North Korea? East Germany? Iran? This is "Make America Twitter Again" and absolutely nobody is fooled.
When you hear a Democrat politician grumbling "could have done a better job of communicating" what he or she means is that the lies were too transparent. Every time.
