When four wheels isn't enough: American hypercar brand Hennessey releases a 6X6 'Texas tank' that costs nearly half a million dollars

The extra length means the load bay area is so expansive that Ikea's biggest flat-pack wardrobe would be no challenge for this particular vehicle.

The Dodge RAM TRX it uses as a donor machine isn't exactly a shrinking violet itself, with the eight-cylinder powerplant in the tuned four-wheel SUV producing 702bhp.

However, the addition of a 2.65-litre supercharger, high-flow fuel injectors and upgraded induction system, Hennessey has wrangled and extra 300bhp out of the V8 engine.

The Texas-based car maker already sells a four-wheel Mammoth 1000 TRX with the same engine specification, which is claimed to be capable of accelerating from a standstill to 60mph in 3.2 seconds and complete a quarter-mile sprint in 11.4 seconds - though expect the 6X6's times to be quite a lot longer. The seven-metre-long body sits atop these massive 20-inch wheels that are wrapped in chunky 37-inch off-road tyres

the Mammoth 1000 TRX will be sold with a two-year/24,000-mile warranty

Nothing like standing behind your product.

True. It is a Dually with the tires arranged front-to-back instead of side-by-side.

They are acting like 6-wheel pickups are something novel. Sheesh.

Mechanically the tandem arrangement, especially if all four wheels are powered, is a lot more complex than a dually.

I couldn’t tell from the pictures whether all four of the tandem wheels are powered.

The headline calls it a 6X6, and the article refers to locking rear axles (plural), so I’d guess that all four rear wheels are powered. Of course, the Daily Mail writer might have been wrong, too.

“I’d guess that all four rear wheels are powered”

On further thought, all 4 wheels would certainly be powered because if only two were powered, the powered wheels would have only half the weight of the rear part of the vehicle, which would be a disaster for traction.

I seems like you would get a lot of tire skip on sharp turns.

That too. Also, for half a mil you’d expect Hennessey not to cut corners.

For some people, having a car is much more important than a place to live.

I know of someone who got an inheritance and then proceeded to use it to buy a brand new car—at the same time he was living rent-free at someone else’s house.

Didn’t occur to him to use that money to pay off his debts and secure a stable living situation.

Nope, gonna use it to buy a new car.
