Oberlin college has $936 million in endowments. It can easily afford to pay Gibsons in cash. Remember, this is a 21st Century “institution of higher learning.” It’s entirely possible they’re just having a hard time figuring out if 35 million is more or less than 936 million.

The overwhelming majority of that endowment is restricted by the grantors, and can only be used for certain things. The College doesn't have the authority to spend it, so that's why it hurts.
They will end up paying, though, after any appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court is exhausted.
