Atlanta public transit CEO Jeffrey Parker committed suicide on Friday night after stepping in front of a train in the outskirts of the city.
Parker, 56, was struck at the East Lake station in Atlanta at 10.30pm, a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority official told DailyMail.com.
No motive for his suicide has been announced. He is survived by his wife Erin and his daughters.
MARTA Board of Directors Chairwoman Rita Scott described him as 'an outstanding leader and steward of MARTA whose passing leaves us all heartbroken.
'We are devastated at this loss as we valued Jeff's leadership and looked forward to him bringing his vision for transit to fruition. The entire metro Atlanta region owes him a debt of gratitude for his transformational efforts and we will not stop working to build on the foundation he created,' she added.
Parker was named general manager and CEO of the agency in March 2018. Since then, he has overseen transit expansion plans, helped negotiate a three percent annual raises for workers and led the agency through a Super Bowl and the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
Parker helped lead MARTA expansion plans, such as a bus rapid transit line in Clayton County, one of the counties that make up the Atlanta metro area, according to the AJC.
He requested funding for the $300 million project through the Federal Transit Administration's Small Starts Program.
In 2019, Parker called for a $100 billion 'moonshot for transit' investment, as the region's population was set to grow by 2.5 million people by 2040, the AJC reported.
The massive funding goal - which would have vastly shadowed a $2.7 billion, 40-year plan approved by Atlanta voters in 2016 - didn't go well with some lawmakers.

It is definitely an odd way to commit suicide.
He put other lives at risk for his supposed suicide, aside from what he did to his loved ones and to the driver.
How much did he embezzle?
He wouldn’t kill himself over the numbers be abuse no one would expect them to look good.
If there is an ongoing fraud investigation in progress; that’s a different matter.
I know of one of the best fraud investigators in the country. Can’t hide embezzlement from someone who knows where to look.
He didn’t put anyone else’s life in danger. Rain would have crushed any part of his body on the tracks. Very heavy vehicles with tandem wheel sets.
Even so, the train probably threw his body to the side of the tracks
I wonder what happened. My experiences with MARTA were always very positive and it was well run with an interracial organization. They had pretty strict rules about what you could do on their property (including eating and drinking) and even back then I personally saw plainclothes officers appear out of nowhere to “remind” patrons very decisively about those rules. I felt 50x safer on a MARTA train than I would in Chicago on an L.
Maybe you are right there is fraud possibly involved.
But with expenses way up and fare collections way down, I don’t think people realize how bad it is.
All of these MARTA threads really need to be spiked.

This guy is going to see that face for the rest of his life and re-live that moment of impact to his grave. But he doesn’t have a name that the media recognizes so nobody hears about or gives a damn about him or his family.

How to run a railroad: embrace Left Wing ideology. hire managers and the workforce based on the color of their skin and not their competency. Provide kickbacks and favoritism to the political machine in Atlanta. Make sure that you have feathered your nest.
When all of that does not produce desired results, jump in front of the first approaching train.
