Not sure they are aware that they are saying what is not true. It is human nature to fill in gaps of our knowledge with assumptions when we are confident that we have the general gist of what is going on. Successful propaganda is not about the details it is about mischaraterizing the big picture and implying that all the details backs up the mischaracterization. So people confidently assume the rest without checking. Any who disagree they assume silly and not worth taking seriously, and when presented with real details that contradict their view they feel certain that its "misinformation".

We all should be wary that we do not fall into the same trap. Its easy to do when one is not sufficiently dedicated to finding the truth rather than being tempted to just pat oneself on the back for being more sophisticated than others.
