A man smashed a gin glass into his best friend's face which had been passed to him by his victim's partner moments earlier.
Daniel Foulkes, 29, assaulted Jordan Cope in a Barry pub on August 15 last year in an altercation that took place during a double date with their respective partners.
The fracas was caught on CCTV and showed Foulkes striking Mr Cope with the glass to the left side of his face, which caused a serious laceration that required surgery and left a scar.
A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday heard the defendant had been close friends with Mr Cope for a number of years and they lived opposite each other in Barry.
On the day in question they had gone to The Buck pub where Foulkes sank 10 pints of Strongbow cider and four or five glasses of pink gin.
Prosecutor Laurence Jones said: "Everyone was having a good evening and were sat drinking and chatting but at 10.20pm Mr Cope suggested to his partner they should go home because he was finding the evening boring."
As they went to leave Mr Cope's partner handed a glass of gin to Foulkes and walked off and was followed by the victim. But as Mr Cope walked past Foulkes' partner grabbed his right forearm and asked them to stay for longer. As a result of this he brushed her hand off and said: "Get off me."
He heard the defendant make a comment and Mr Cope ran back towards him but as he reached him Foulkes swung his right arm and drove the glass into the left side of the victim's face.
Mr Jones said: "He felt a blow to his face and thought the defendant had hit him and walked to the exit. His face was wet and he thought it was sweat but after using his shirt to wipe his face he could see it was bloody."
Mr Cope was taken to hospital to receive treatment for lacerations to his cheek, mouth, left eyelid, left eye, and neck, which required stitches and surgery.
'Grade-A student' was running heroin and crack dealing operation in residential streets In a victim impact statement read out to the court, Mr Cope said: "I was in total shock and left with life-changing injuries. The defendant was my best friend and I helped him out a lot."
Mr Cope said he now suffered panic attacks and was left paranoid about how he looked due to the scar he received in the assault. He added: "I struggle to understand why Daniel did what he did and how he can justify what he did to me. I am scarred for life and my world has been turned upside-down."
Foulkes was arrested and broke down in tears after being shown the CCTV footage of the assault. The defendant, of Beatrice Road, later pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.
In mitigation defence barrister Adam Sharp said his client's actions were not premeditated and he described an element of "provocation" in Mr Cope's actions.
He said that Foulkes had suffered from ill health over the past decade, with his weight reaching 38 stone at one point.
Mr Sharp added: "There has been tangible remorse from the defendant and he broke down after being confronted with what he had done to his best friend. Nothing will undo the harm caused to Mr Cope but Mr Foulkes has to live with what he has done and he feels that acutely."
Sentencing, Judge Michael Fitton QC said only an immediate custodial sentence could be justified. He added: "The injuries were shocking, the scars are shocking, and the psychological harm will leave him with a lifelong consequence from your conduct."
Foulkes was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment.
We’ve all been there...
It seems to be a national sport in the UK to smash people with glass bottles. That, and to throw acid on people. What a bunch of rejects.
And head butting.

Wow. Think of how bad it might have been if they weren’t best friends.
Actually, only some have.
My feeble attempt at humor.
light weight.
Very bad run-on sentence.
The fact that the victim was running a "heroin and crack-dealing operation" sounds much more serious than merely being assaulting by his friend - why isn't there more about this in the article?
Regards,
Several years ago at a local pub, a neighbor was drinking Long Island Ice Tea. It’s a mixture of many shots and is quite strong. After several of them, this young man of small stature became violent.
He tossed the two burly bouncers like they were rag dolls, knocking over the huge trash dumpster.
As I approached him to calm him down, he started growling and barking at me like a dog. I held my hands up to protect myself and he went down, curled in a fetal position on the gravel parking lot and started whining. I never touched him.
I shouted the guys name and there was silence, Again I shouted his name and there was shouting and moaning in response. I insisted on talking to him and not this thing in him.
Finally, the guy passed out and we took him home.
This guy is normally very quiet and passive. We’ve had a few drinks together since and laughed at the incident.
There is a reason alcohol is called “spirits” as it opens the door of the soul for spirit entry.
That part about the “Grade A student” was a link to a separate article. In my opinion, it should have been deleted from the post.
People let me tell you bout my best friend
He’s a warm-hearted person who’ll love me to the end
People let me tell you bout my best friend
He’s a one boy cuddly toy my up my down my pride and joy
People let me tell you now he’s so much fun
Whether we’re talking man to man
Or whether we’re talking son to son
Cause he’s my best friend now
That too. They ban handguns and knives in the UK, and people just toss acid. I think I’d rather be shot.
“I’ll have what he’s having!”
sounds like someone got smashed...
“He’s a one boy cuddly toy my up my down my pride and joy”
People let me tell you now he’s so much fun
Whether we’re talking man to man
Or whether we’re talking son to son
Cause he’s my best friend now
I scrolled through the comments hoping someone would have a pithy, snarky comment on this sentence:
“A man smashed a gin glass into his best friend’s face which had been passed to him by his victim’s partner moments earlier.”
That face gets around.
No we haven’t
Alcoholism is a terrible thing
