As the 2020 election approaches, it appears likely that we won’t get to see President Donald Trump’s tax returns anytime soon.
House Democrats are becoming increasingly resigned to the idea that the battle over the president’s taxes will be a long slog, according to a report from Jeff Stein, Rachael Bade, and Jacqueline Alemany at the Washington Post. The White House has signaled it’s prepared to fight back at every turn. The court battle over Trump’s federal returns, even if Democrats do prevail, will probably drag on for months. And Democrats haven’t even asked for the president’s state tax returns from New York, which in July passed a law that would allow three congressional tax committees to request them.
How to go about getting Trump’s tax returns — and whether House Ways and Means Committee Chair Richard Neal (D-MA), who is leading such efforts, is doing enough — has been a matter of debate on the left for months. It is emblematic of a growing feeling among some progressives that Democrats have been too hesitant to take Trump to task since taking back the House in the 2018 midterm elections. The White House’s resistance efforts have worked better than expected, and the Democrats’ strategy has not.

Yes because if not it would have leaked a long time ago already.
No one with that complicated of a portfolio is squeaky clean. It just isn’t possible given the deliberately obscure regulations. It won’t matter how honest the accountants are, everything is up to interpretation, precisely why the Democrats want Trump’s tax returns.
He should fight them at every turn. Private is private and no one individual can be singled out as exception no matter who asks....

Trump’s tax filings have been submitted and reviewed both to the State of NY and the Feds for decades. If something was outside the norms, he would have been subjected to an audit. And you can bet with all the Leftists drones in the IRS and State of NY taxing authority, if there was anything embarrassing in Trump’s taxes, they would have been leaked to the press already.
I honestly dont think Trump actually cares about the tax returns, but uses it to distract his opponents.
The key to your statement is, “...outside the norms....”
Outside the norms is what the taxing authorities seek, but the democrats will look at everything, and they WILL find something for which Trump could be declared guilty for ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’.
Remember that as long as they hold the House, they get to define what those ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ are.

Try as I might, I cannot think of one piece of successful legislation they've done EXCEPT opposing President Trump, road blocking, gas lighting, fart lighting, and any other action beyond their Trump Derangement Syndrome.
