Missouri democrats used that “keep the flame alive” motto to get Gov. Mel Carnahan elected US senator after he and his son were killed in a tragic plane crash in 2000. Then the lt. gov. appointed Mel’s widow to serve in his place. I lived in their home town at the time and I found it revolting. Dems never fail to capitalize on death.
