This is the problem of privilege. It skews our ability to grasp what the world looks like outside our view.
The absence of white athletes kneeling for the anthem Sunday was a particularly illustrative moment in white privilege.
See, for white athletes the anthem and American flag do represent freedom, liberty and whatever other amorphous American values one might ascribe these symbols. So, from their view, kneeling would be disrespectful to the privileges a white supremacist nation affords them.
Weve all heard the typical argument against kneeling. Kneeling during the anthem disrespects the flag and the soldiers who fought for your right to protest and blah blah blah patriotism!
Now, Im not going to spend much time with the most obvious counter, but its worth stating. In the fairytale we Americans tell ourselves where soldiers fight wars for freedom and not imperial conquests, the story says theyre fighting for someones right to protest, not the opposite. So using the troops as a cudgel against protest wholly misunderstands even our own national fairytale.
So, thats obvious enough, but what Im talking about is this. If white athletes cant fathom kneeling because they feel soldiers fought for their rights and blah blah blah patriotism, its because they are treated as full citizens and afforded those rights they imagine soldiers fought for. Interpreting their own experience as something more universal, they struggle to understand why anyone should kneel. Indeed, for them, the anthem and American flag represent promises fulfilled....

Way ahead of you all. I drew the line at rap music.
How about all the kneeling players stop taking evil white mans money? You know for the cause.
I’ll stand for America. Now, what are you dirty little Proggy shits going to do about it?
“So, from their view, kneeling would be disrespectful to the privileges a white supremacist nation affords them.”
How is it there are blacks who are millionaires and allowed to take a knee, in a “white supremacist nation”?
Haha, these fools want to have it every way possible in their favor. What happened to “they are only exercising their First Amendment rights by kneeling”? So white players can’t exercise the same by honoring their country without being a white supremacist?
Raising kids outside a nuclear family and eschewing education are not part of a winning path.
We aren’t going to be able to coexist in a free country with people who think this way.
They are going to have to go, and they aren’t going to go away on their own.
Communist filth and vile race baiting.
Certainly seems to be the legacy of Barack Hussein Obama.
Communism has always been about collectivizing frustrated criminals, failed lawyers, illegals and, yes, democrat white supremacists with no where else to go
Just keep making it up as you go along
These people are amazingly stupid
So now honoring the National Anthem is racist. Wow. If we’re not at war already, I don’t know what war is.
Virtue signaling lemmings. That is what the kneelers are proclaiming themselves to be.
Some day there will be no more whiners. It will be heaven.
I know some weak white pussies who would be down with this.
Jesse Benn describes himself as a Dad, “partner,” engaged citizen, opinionated writer, leftist, PhD student. And he’s written for Backpacker Magazine.
He’s a limp-wristed idiot.
It rained today!
The principals of humidity, condensation, saturation points water absorption rates and wind variation were probably all devised by white men, and are therefore really kinda racist!
Sarcasm, but possible in this bizarro world we now live in.
I thought it was Fudgepacker Magazine.
This guy has white liberal doucebag written all over him. Betcha he looks like all the other “white knights” that think minorities are too stupid to think for themselves and can only be saved by white liberals.
The closing of the asylums due to liberal pressure in the ‘70s and ‘80s, combined with the Ritalin Generation of the ‘90s all grown up, have made for a pretty terrible combo.
