Some time in 1956 and 1957, (PUREX), Sixty eight railroad flat cars, loaded with un contained processing plant equipment and refuse, laden with, extremely high levels of Plutonium contamination were rolled into temporary earth covered storage.
Sometime in late June or early May, thousands of cubic feet of this storage collapsed, squirting some of the worlds most contaminated air into the Colombia basin.
Technicians doing radiation monitoring Tuesday morning observed, some readings were much higher than expected, they began checking around for the cause and found an anomaly.
Nearly 4,800 workers at the nuclear waste site were ordered to take immediate indoor shelter, an Energy Department spokeswoman said.
Both DOE and state officials claim that no airborne contamination was detected, raising a more fatal possibility that monitoring design or operational failure airborne releases. Untimely detection of dust contaminated with radiological material to be inhaled by employees and every living person in the Kennewick, Pasco, Richland metropolis areas of S. W. Washington State. No Off site notification was initiated.
If we had some high winds after the hole was detected, Shoop said, it could be a very different situation

Yo pardner, “May 10, 2017” yo. WTF? We already had a large discussion about this weeks ago.
Odd to post this now, it’s all sealed up again. News from Hanford more recently is the LIGO detection.
“Sealed up”
ROFLMAO
They literally “covered it up...
With tons of earth.
Lie. The article specifically says that no radioactivity was detected. Given the sophistication of the instrumentation available to Hanford, if any radioactivity had been released it "would" damned well have been detected.
Tons of earth and tarping are quite adequate for solid waste until moved to another location.
“Colombia basin.”
No Seattle Times writer would make a spelling error like that and I believe the OP made up parts of the article. The article at the source is vastly different from the “excerpt” above.
Then you have more faith in today's journalists that I do. Given all the huge stinkers of both fact and spelling that today's reporters have been guilty of to my own personal knowledge, I'm not so sure.
"...and I believe the OP made up parts of the article. The article at the source is vastly different from the excerpt above."
I read the original article at the ST site. What are these vast differences you see?? Maybe I am missing something.
How many tunnels are there?
