But my main query was what provision in the Constitution is there for an ailing candidate after the primary elections are over?
I can’t see any there.
The ‘rats may be stuck with her. Zombie vote or not.
The constitution is silent on this as it would be an intra-party issue.
Which part of the Constitution says anything about candidates?
Political parties have no constitutional standing. They are private organizations. They don’t exist as far as the Constitution is concerned. Whatever the bylaws of the political organization says will be what is followed. In modern times the Rats have had to replace a nominated candidate before; their Veep nominee (Thomas Eggleston) who ran with McGovern back in 1976. He had been treated for a “nervous breakdown” (or so they said at the time!) and was pulled from the ticket. If I remember this right he was replaced by Sargent Shriver. Now it’s the top of the ticket & Hellary Clinton, I just don’t see it happening. Unless she isn’t breathing or in a coma.
