I tend to agree with you. It’s when a man is hungry, empty belly hungry or in fear for his family that you see him start to react in the mode of a rat backed into a corner. Fighting and spitting and kicking because there is nowhere else to run to.
Soldiers have to be taught to fight, to understand the consequences of fighting and that people die in combat or as sometimes is a worse fate survive but so badly damaged in mind and body that they might as well had died on the battlefield. Civilians can talk a good game but really how many are willing to go that extra step?
You know... the one that breaks the “Normalcy Bias” or as I call it, “Social Inertia”. A person will not know until it happens and when it does? You can’t ever go back to the person you once were.
