Huh, indeed! McCain’s anything but “Evangelical” (ask Jerry Falwell & Pat Roberts), and one of Palin’s parents, not she, is the lapsed Catholic.
An Evangelical is ANY KIND OF PROTESTANT. It is not exclusively synonymous with Pentecostal or Fundy or Baptist, and you might want to check out the Time Magazine telephone interview where she, herself, asserts she was Baptised Catholic as a baby ~ http://onelacatholic.blogspot.com/2008/08/sarah-palin-was-baptized-catholic-as.html
Now, about McCain's religion, he was christened as a child in the Episcopal church ~ which may well mean he's not a real Christian ~ but that's a different sort of debate. What he hasn't done is undergo a form of "confirmation" (in Catholic parlance) so that he can be a member of that congregation.
He's still, according to virtually all Christian tradition, a Christian, and, philologically, an Evangelical! Still, he wouldn't have been allowed to rent a pew in George Washington's congregation until he underwent confirmation.
