Shiloh is 14 miles from my front door. Forrest spent the night walking around the Union lines and came back to the Confederate side begging the commanders to attack in the night because he knew that by early morning the Confederates would be outnumbered. Buell was ferrying troops across the Tennessee River all night long and Lew Wallace with 10,000 troops had made a circuitous march along Owl Creek to Crump and then back to Shiloh. There were many competent commanders that would have made a significant difference.
