Actors always go for leading roles. Offer a politician any role he wants in a movie and you'll learn a lot about how that politician sees himself. George Allen also played a Confederate Officer. That was more wishful thinking than anything else, but with Byrd it was the real thing.

West Virginia's a border state, with Northern and Southern influences, and Byrd was very definitely one of the Southerners. See his wartime letter to Mississippi's Senator Bilbo, and his fourteen hour filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill, very much in cooperation with Southern Senators. A Northerner might have voted against the Bill, but wouldn't have joined in the filibuster.

But there's not really any point in arguing with you, is there? For an argument to have a point, both sides have to be willing to listen to reason and logic, and you don't, do you?
