Why Didn't Samantha Sleep With an Arab Man? [SATC2]
Slate ^ | May 28, 2010 | Hanna Rosin

...For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, European leisure travelers made endless romantic speculations about the “secrets of the harems,” writes Judy Mabor in Veiled Half-Truths. They filled their fantasies with erotic scenes of dark-eyed women, but kept their distance; even as they fantasized, they pitied the poor, backwards Arab women, Mabor writes. In later years, however, Westerners began to feel guilty about these one-sided Orientalist fantasies. In Muriel Spark’s The Mandelbaum Gate, Hideous Kinky, and Sheltering Sky, the Western woman sleeps with an Arab man. The experience turns the tables on the usual fantasy. Now it’s the Western woman who becomes the other, exotic and dangerous. She gets humbled as she is forced, temporarily, to live by Muslim mores. For a while, she leaves her smug cocoon of Western superiority.

In Sex and the City 2, Samantha could easily have slept with an Arab man; she sleeps with everyone else, after all. This might have helped her understand the sex appeal of the veil, and the allure of a world in which sex is not always immediately there for the taking (just as she once experienced this on the show with her tantric yoga instructor lover). But nothing like that happens. The Arab men on the show are all tea-pourers or personal shoppers or camel herders. The cute butlers who are assigned to the women at their posh hotel are off-limits because one is sweetly in love with his wife, and the other is gay. The rest of Arab mankind is a sweaty, hairy, angry mob even Samantha wouldn’t touch...

Those who despise the West have yet to show me a better place to live.

I really believe we could have peace in our time if Arab men had a “larger endowment” so to speak. I mean really - they keep their women bundled up so no one can take their wives and daughters away, they are angry all the time, they are paranoid about every non-Arab man in the world, they beat their women... It really is all about sex. Somewhere some woman laughed and the rest of the world has to pay for all time. I’m wondering about those stories about Mohammed and the Jewish woman who tried to poison him - did she poison him with laughter? Hmmmm Things to think about on a boring Tuesday morning.

Sure it is. There is rape in the middle east. And the woman is then punished for being defiled.

Muslim men are perfectly permitted to have sex with their slaves and their child brides.

It isn't there "for the taking" for women because it is a misogynist society.

She gets knocked up, has a young male child in Kenya who grows up to be President of the United States. Not quite Black, not quite White but Moslem. Divorces the Kenyan Moslem father, moves back to all-white Kansas and soon misses the exotic. Abandons the son to her parents and takes off for Indonesia. Marries another Moslem and dies.

The end.

No, it goes deeper than that. The editorial is pointing out that SATC2 demonstrates that elites in the Western entertainment industry cannot deal with how it really is for women in Arab/Muslim culture, so when a major movie is set in that part of the world, they settle for shallow, banal stereotypes that completely ignore the suffering of their sisters behind the veils.

Western Feminists have totally abandoned the millions of women who suffer daily in the Middle East in favor of cultural relativism and Leftist ideology to the point of not even bothering to tell their horrific stories.

I remember the film “Not Without My Daughter,” with Sally Fiend of all people. Harrowing. I bet it could never be made today.

She didn’t sleep with them, because she didn’t find ear and nose hair attractive... nuff said.

Wow, do people even live in the real world anymore? Everyone obsessed over what fictional characters do or don’t do and then spin it as some huge deal... insane.

I remember that film also and agree that it couldn’t be made today. That reminds me of a fact of Islamic governance that is oft-ignored in the West.

Years ago, Western woman married an Iranian and before they went to that country for a visit, she made him promise that he would not try to keep them there. Once there, he reneged, so she took him to court in Iran.

The court ruled that lying or not fulfilling a promise is not only permissible, but obligatory if it is deemed to serve the greater Cause of Islam. She was thus forced to remain there and live as livestock or leave w/o her children.

Let us consider the implications of this. It basically means that Muslims consider a different set of rules applies to them with respect to keeping promises and telling the truth to the Infidel.

You might notice that they have no problem lying to us on a regular basis.

agreed... but i don’t see how a skank sleeping with a middle eastern guy will demonstrate the conditions middle eastern women live under.

when middle eastern types leave their country, they kick into all the stereotypical western behaviors. drinking/drugs. women’s fashion showing skin. sleeping around. and if the skank were to sleep with one of these guys, it would be in a western country... and she would never be subjected to the rigors of islamic life in an islamic country. she would never fear being beating for daring to walk alone in public. she would never be beaten for exposing anything but her eyes. she would never be turned away at hospitals because there are no female doctors (only related males may see a female unclothed... which leads to the incest... but that’s another story). she would never be forced to eat in a secluded/sectioned off section of a restaurant.

so again, i don’t see the point. having her sleep with a middle eastern guy, most likely a prince in new york for college or business, would only go to promote how worldly the middle eastern men are... and not how mid-evil their customs truly are.

I'm loath to seek sexual explanations for customs and behavior, but this is a very interesting conjecture.

That might be because GK Chesterton was right when he said:
“Feminism is the mode of thought which hates everything feminine.”
