As far as the west, it was part of human existence throughout recorded history until certain religious dissenters in England began speaking out against it. This filtered down to the colonies, and at the point of our Constitutional Convention, it was acknowledged by some Founders as inherently in opposition to the ideals of our nascent nation. The matter was not addressed because the economies of agrarian, southern States were highly dependent upon it.
One Founder, George Mason, a Virginian and slaveholder himself, predicted either war or the end of the Republic over slavery; he did so before the Constitution was ever ratified. Mason was prescient. We got the war, and arguably got the destruction of the original ideals of the Republic in the bargain. It was a sad conflict that was foreseen by many and in many ways was destined to happen.
My own ancestors were almost entirely on the Confederate side of the conflict. Very few of them owned slaves. They went to war believing they were defending hearth and home from invasion.
