Laz, Laz... Now, to get serious for a second, let's examine the positions of the two sides and you'll see what the problem was. The South was nearly all - I can't think of a single exception - south of here. And from their point of view, the North was pretty much north of there. Except for the parts that were east and west of one another, like North and South Carolina.

It just isn't reconcilable short of a nuclear holocaust, and they didn't have nukes then, or Mom and Dad saying "you two stop fighting or we're gonna stop the car right now!" because they didn't have cars back then either. There was no real alternative but insane suicidal bayonet charges against massed artillery. Which they did have back then.
